Burnley FC Women went top of the table in the Northern Premier Division of the FA Women’s National League courtesy of a 3-1 win on the road against Wolverhampton Wanderers Women.
Ella Kinzett – who is on a dual registration from Manchester United Women – grabbed her first goal in Claret & Blue to send Burnley into half time winning 1-0, with Evie Priestley adding a second half brace. Wolves’ goal came in the first of five added minutes at the end of the second half.
Claret Women boss Jonathan Morgan made five changes to the side from last weekend’s 3-1 victory away at Hull City Ladies in the Determining Round of FA Women’s National League Cup.
Emma Taylor and Alanta Brown returned from injury while Ellie May and Leah Embley were brought back in to bolster the attack, and Jess Simpson also returned at left back.
24 hours prior, Simpson was an unused substitute for parent Club Manchester United in their FA Women’s Super League Cup game at Aston Villa as allowed by the terms of her dual registration agreement.
Ellie York and Lizzy Hamer both dropped out of the squad with Olivia Greenhalgh, Sarah Greenhalgh and Lucia Molinari named as substitutes at the New Bucks Head, home of non-league outfit AFC Telford United.
First Half
With both sides starting well, there was a flurry of chances in the opening 10 minutes. Millie Ravening first went close, dragging a shot wide having latched onto Leah Embley’s cross, with Evie Priestley also sending an effort into the side netting.
At the other end, Maz Gauntlett struck wide on the half-volley from the edge of the area before Helen Dermody’s shot went whistling over from distance.
And after the game had settled down, there was little action of note other than a succession of Wolves corners, prior to the opening goal which came through Kinzett on 31 minutes.
Ellie May sent a corner delivery in which was initially headed away, but when the Claret Women kept it alive, Kinzett was there at the back post to stab home.
Steady at the back for the remainder of the first half, Wolves struggled to create any clear-cut chances which threatened Lauren Bracewell’s goal, and it remained 1-0 at the break.
Second Half
Searching for a second, Ravening had a volley on the turn in the area well held by Wolves goalkeeper Bec Thomas soon after the restart.
The Wanderers then came close to a leveller as Gauntlett’s header from Laura Cooper’s cross hit the side netting, while Ravening again tried her luck minutes later but dragged a strike wide.
The second eventually came through the ever-clinical Priestley on 63 minutes with the striker taking advantage of a weak clearance from a cross into the area to dispatch the ball into the bottom corner.
Sarah Greenhalgh then replaced Ellie May in Burnley’s first change, and she almost converted from close range following a corner, but ‘keeper Thomas scrambled back to prevent the strike going over the line.
Greenhalgh also had a shot held by Thomas on 74 minutes having cut inside well to get away from her marker, and would have another effort go narrowly wide four minutes later after a driving run forward by Ravening.
Trying to find a route back into the contest, Amy Hughes – who earlier had headed over – sent an effort over the bar from distance, before Priestley made it 3-0 with her second of the game five minutes from time.
Latching onto a ball over the top, Priestley this time beat Thomas on the half volley from an acute angle.
And despite a late consolation from substitute Ali Miller for the hosts, Burnley earned a 3-1 victory which sent the Claret Women top of the league.
They next return to action with a home game against Nottingham Forest Women at the County Ground in Leyland on Sunday, October 9 (14:00 KO). Entry is free at the Lancashire FA’s headquarters, and we look forward to seeing some of you there!
