Clarets prepare for cup action

Burnley Women turn their attention to the FA Women’s National League Cup on Sunday, with Sutton Coldfield Town the opponents in the first round proper.

The Clarets got to this point with a convincing 7-0 victory over AFC Fylde back in August, in which Laura Elford netted a hat-trick

Further goals came from Bella Reidford, Aimee Kelly, Charley Docherty and Rhema-Lord Mears in that determining round fixture at the Daisy Communications Arena in Nelson.

Rebecca Sawiuk’s side have won their last two league outings by a one-goal margin and were 2-1 winners at Liverpool Feds earlier this week.

Centre-back Georgia Marshall scored her first goal of the season with a 12th-minute header at Jericho Lane, but the Clarets were pegged back seven minutes into the second half by Ellie Fletcher.

However, the team refused to give up and midfielder Brenna McPartlan netted a 97th-minute winner to spark jubilant scenes on the pitch and in the dugout.

They’ll be hoping to continue that momentum into Sunday’s clash with Sutton Coldfield Town, who operate in the Division One Midlands of the Women’s National League.

That’s the fourth tier of the English football pyramid and the Royals currently site 8th in the 12-team table with six points from seven matches.

Having received a bye in the preliminary round, this is the first time Ryan Hamilton’s team have played in the competition this season. They were, however, beaten 1-0 by Northampton Town earlier this week.

Kick-off at the Dominos Arena (B72 1NL) is 2pm and tickets are priced at £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.

If you can’t be there in person, live updates will be shared on our dedicated Women’s social media channels and a match report will follow the final whistle on www.burnleyfootballclub.com.
