Laura Elford will be hoping to pick up where she left off in the FA Women’s National League Cup when Burnley Women visit Sutton Coldfield Town on Sunday.

The striker netted a hat-trick in the first 48 minutes of August’s 7-0 determining round victory over AFC Fylde, continuing her fine start to the season in front of goal.

Rebecca Sawiuk’s side now travel to the Midlands for their first-round tie and, like Fylde, Sutton Coldfield are fourth-tier opposition.

Reflecting on that big win at Nelson FC’s Daisy Communications Arena, Elford said: “Fylde came with a gameplan and tried to execute it - they did really well in parts.

“We expect the same again on Sunday and we don’t take any opposition for granted, making sure to prepare for every game the same way. “

The Clarets come into this game buoyed by Wednesday’s late victory over Liverpool Feds, with Brenna McPartlan scoring a 97th minute winner to add to Georgia Marshall’s first-half header.

With the league’s current top two in Nottingham Forest and Rugby Borough playing each other and drawing on the night, the result means the gap at the top of the table has now reduced.

“It was obviously important that we got the three points,” Elford continued.

“At times we do make things difficult for ourselves but the main thing was getting the win, regardless of how scrappy or messy it was.

“When we’re in control of a game we need to push harder and kill it off.

“However, we came together and we had the belief right through until the 97th minute that we could get another goal and win. We’re unified as a group from that.”

Sawiuk and her players have been open in expressing their ambition of gaining promotion this season.

Winning can often breed confidence, and Elford finished by re-affirming the team’s desire to do well in cup competitions too.

“We want to win silverware and progress as far as we can in every cup, whether that be the Lancashire FA Women’s Senior Cup, the League Cup or a really good run in the FA Cup.”

Supporters are welcome to attend the 2pm kick-off at the Dominos Arena (B72 1NL), and tickets can be purchased at the ground. Adults are £5, while concessions are £3.

If you can’t be there in person, live updates will be shared on our dedicated Women’s social media channels and a match report will follow the final whistle on www.burnleyfootballclub.com.
