Burnley FC Women will look to continue their unbeaten run, when they travel to Kingston Park to take on Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon in the FA Women’s National League North (2pm KO).
The Claret Women were last in action on Wednesday night, when they beat Halifax 2-0 at the Lancashire FA County Ground to stretch their run without loss in the league to seven.
Aimee Kelly netted the first when Lizzy Hamer played the ball into her, and she turned and struck into the far top corner.
The forward netted her brace and made sure of the three points just after the break, after the Eagles failed to clear Alethea Paul’s cross and the ball bounced into the path of the striker who finished into the bottom corner.
The win extended the Clarets gap at the top of the table to six points, ahead of second placed Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Magpies, managed by Becky Langley, have enjoyed a strong start to the season, winning all four of their opening games in the league.
Alongside the Clarets, they are the only two unbeaten sides remaining in the FA Women’s National League North, and last time out Newcastle recorded a 4-0 win over Liverpool Feds away from home.
Kacie Elson opened the scoring for the Magpies before Emma Kelly made it two just after the break.
A Bridget Galloway second half brace secured the three points for Newcastle as they made it four wins from four in league action at Jericho Lane.
In the last meeting between these two sides, Burnley fell just short in extra time, as the Magpies claimed a 3-2 victory in the FAWNL Cup.
The hosts started the game well and were in front within the first 15 minutes, as Lara Miller was adjudged to have brought down Kacie Elson and Bridget Galloway slotted in from the spot.
The Clarets then made an extremely quick start to the second half and were level within the first minute as smart play from Kelly found Leah Embley, who in turn dinked the ball towards the back post, where an onrushing Millie Ravening was there to head into the back of the net.
The hosts put themselves back in front just three minutes into extra time, as Galloway shrugged off a challenge from a Burnley defender, before rolling the ball past Kirstie Levell into the bottom corner.
In the 107th minute of play, however, Embley would find the net with a brilliantly curled effort into the far corner past the outstretched hand of Grace Donnelly to equalise for the Clarets.
Substitute Amaya Coleman-Evans had two one-on-one chances to put Burnley in front, but both efforts were kept out by Donnelly, before Newcastle went up the other end and won the game through Becky Ferguson, as she slotted past Levell.
