Clarets hit the road for league clash

Burnley Women will be aiming for an eighth straight Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League victory when they travel to Loughborough Lightning on Sunday.

The Clarets will be aiming to bounce back from last week’s FAWNL Cup defeat to Plymouth Argyle and can do the double over their Midlands-based opponents here.

Loughborough are competing at the lower end of the table and will be keen to record a first victory of 2026.

How to watch

The match will take place at the Loughborough University Stadium (LE11 3QF) and tickets can be purchased from our hosts NOW.

Adults are £5, concessions (60+) are £3, students with valid ID are £2 and young adults (16-17 years) are £1. Those aged 15 and under can gain entry for free.

The opposition

Loughborough Lightning are competing at third tier level this season following a record-breaking campaign last time out.

The team dominated the FA Women’s National League Division One Midlands with an unbeaten record, finishing ahead of their nearest challengers by an eight-point margin.

Lightning are managed by Charles Baxter, a University alumnus who joined following a successful spell as Assistant Head Coach of Ipswich Town Women.

His side have found the going tough this term, though, claiming eight points from their 14 league matches to date.

It’s been back-to-back defeats since the turn of the year, the latest of which came against Rugby Borough last week. It finished 2-0, with goals from Sofia Mallon and Yasmin Mosby.

Burnley were 5-0 victors when they travelled to Lancashire back in August, with Mel Lawley’s brace being accompanied by further strikes from Tilly Wilkes, Yana Daniëls and Thea Paul.

Players to look out for include topscorer Doris Greenwood and striker Zynia Delglyn, who recently hit 50 appearances for the Club.

“We’ve seen a real positive reaction after last weekend’s disappointing result, which was the first one of this year really.

“The league is our bread and butter, and we’re unbeaten so far this season. We want to continue that from now until the end of the season, starting with a win this weekend.

“It will be a different group of players to what we faced against Loughborough earlier this season, but everything is about us heading into it.

“We want to take hold of it early doors and really impose ourselves on the fixture.”
