Burnley FC Women are on their travels again this Sunday (September 25), taking on Hull City Ladies in the Determining Round of the FA Women’s National League Cup.
The game had originally been scheduled for September 11, but was postponed as the country mourned the sad passing of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II three days prior.
But now having been re-arranged for this week, the Claret Women will want to continue their fine form in the league when the cup comes around. Under Jonathan Morgan, the side have enjoyed a bright start to life, winning four & drawing the other in their first five.
Leah Embley grabbed a winner with the last kick of the game last time out as Morgan’s side claimed a dramatic three points away at Boldmere St Michaels Women, 3-2 the scoreline.
Joining just hours earlier, full back Jess Simpson played the full 90 minutes on debut, impressing down the left, though Alanta Brown was forced off with a knock midway through the first half.
Burnley are now 2nd in the league table, and know that a win in East Yorkshire on Sunday would see them progress on from the Determining Round into the First Round Proper.
Opponents Hull may not be in the same division anymore, but are familiar foes from last term having faced them in the FAWNL Cup as well as the league.
Finishing 4th in the Northern Premier Division of the FA Women’s National League, Burnley did the double over the Tigresses, who were relegated having finished second bottom with nine points from 24 league games.
A 3-0 success at Hull was followed up by a 7-0 winning margin at the LFA County Ground back in April, a game which saw both Evie Priestley & Millie Ravening amongst the scorers.
Netting last week at Boldmere, Burnley fan Priestley reached the 50-goal mark for her hometown Club. She already has five in the first five of this campaign.
Final replay in First Round of regional cup for Claret Women
Now in the FAWNL Division One North, City’s Ladies also recruited a new manager over the summer in the form of Chris Hames, formerly at the helm of both Sheffield FC Women & Bradford City Women.
Under Hames, Hull have had a mixed bag of results at the start of the campaign. Losing to both Leeds United Women and Norton & Stockton Ancients Ladies, the Tigresses had turned a corner with back-to-back wins against York City Ladies and Newcastle United Women.
They then lost 2-0 at home to Stockport County Ladies last Sunday, now sitting 8th in the fourth tier with six points from five games.
