Burnley FC Women are back in action on Sunday, as they travel to face Newcastle United at Kingston Park, in the Determining Round of the FA Women’s National League Cup (2pm KO, BST).
The Clarets were victorious on the opening day of the season, beating Liverpool Feds 3-2 at Jericho Lane, in the FA Women’s National League North.
Lizzie Hamer opened the scoring before Feds levelled ten minutes after the break through Beth Donoghue.
The Clarets instantly retook the lead as Leah Embley netted and Millie Ravening’s top corner strike made it 3-1.
Feds netted a late consolation through captain Chantelle Thompson, but Burnley saw the game out to claim three points on the opening day.
That result leaves the Claret Women sat fourth in the table.
The newly promoted Magpies did not play on the opening day, as their match against Halifax FC was postponed, and therefore will open their campaign in this cup tie.
Becky Langley’s side topped the table on goal difference last season, just beating Durham Cestria to the title, with both sides finishing on 56 points in the FA Women’s National League Division One North.
The cup's structure begins with a determining round, where all teams are drawn against each other. The winning teams then are drawn into either a preliminary round or directly into the first round of the cup, meaning 32 teams then play the first round.
The losers of the determining round play a preliminary round and then a round of 32 onwards for the FA Women's National League Plate, so the competition splits into two as they winners enter the Cup, and the losers, the Plate.
The Claret Women reached the quarter-final of the Cup side of the draw last season, losing out 2-1 to eventual winners Nottingham Forest.
Charlotte Steggles gave Forest the lead from the penalty spot after Ellie York was adjudged to have brought down Arryana Daniels, and Gianna Mitchell added a second for the hosts 10 minutes from time.
Alyssa Aherne netted late on, but that goal proved to only be a consolation as the Claret Women fell to a defeat for the first time since March 2022.
Newcastle lost out in the preliminary round of the Cup competition last season, with a 4-1 penalty shootout defeat to Durham Cestria.
