Boss Sean Dyche hailed debutant Wayne Hennessey and the Clarets’ trademark qualities as his side booked their place in round three of the Carabao Cup.
Burnley will now face Rochdale at Turf Moor after beating Premier League rivals Newcastle United 4-3 on penalties at St James’ Park.
Neither side could find a goal in 90 minutes as Hennessey stood firm behind Burnley’s resolute back four.
And the Wales international then saved two spot-kicks in the shoot-out before Charlie Taylor’s decisive penalty took Dyche’s side through.

“We are stretched but the mentality has won us through tonight; the will, the desire, the good habits,” said the Burnley boss, who made six changes to his side and handed Aaron Lennon a start after signing the winger for a second time.
“There was nothing it in the first half. I thought both teams were off.
“In the second half they started brightly but once again our mentality, organisation, the will and the desire were there.
“All those things are important when you’re wearing a Burnley shirt and I thought they were on show.
“It’s tough coming here, especially when we’re patching a side together, so I’m very pleased to get through.
"It's a good win which brings that sort of feel-good to the group, especially when they are stretched."

Hennessey denied former Burnley midfielder Jeff Hendrick with one outstanding second-half save and once again came up trumps to keep out efforts from Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron in the shoot-out.
And with Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes, Dwight McNeil and Taylor all keeping their nerve from the penalty spot, the Clarets secured a first win of the season to potentially kick-start a cup run.
“The penalties were excellent, but I wouldn’t take anything away from Wayne,” Dyche added.
“He’s a very experienced keeper who's fitted into the group fantastically well, exactly as we thought he would.
“I think he’s enjoying it and he will certainly have enjoyed that tonight.”
