Head Coach Scott Parker insists he and his side will learn from Saturday's defeat against the Black Cats and acknowledged the 'bitterly disappointing' afternoon for the Clarets.
Sunderland took the lead in the first half through Romaine Mundle's strike and despite efforts from the visitors to get back into the game, the hosts held on to ensure Burnley's first defeat of the 2024/25 campaign.
Speaking post-match at the Stadium of Light, Parker said: "First of all, we're bitterly disappointed with the result. I don't think we started well. We started very slowly, lacked quality and intensity and I think in large parts of the game we were just second best.
"You come to a stadium like this, against a team that have won their opening two games with the fans behind them and it was just disappointing, but you can learn from days like this.
"Yes, there were a lot of changes to the team late on and it has been a tough week for us in terms of injuries, but this is sometimes what happens when you're in the situation we are in."
Parked added: "In professional sport you can lose games and win games. There are large elements of the game that we still need to improve on, we will go over the game today and see where we can improve for sure.
"It's like weathering a little storm at the moment, defeats happen but you can learn a lot in games like today and in these moments. It will be good learning for us."

When asked how the final week of the summer transfer window looks for the Club, Parker said: "We're a week away from the transfer window closing now. Dara (O'Shea) will be leaving the Club, we expect that to be completed by tomorrow.
"I think it's going to be a busy week for us for sure. The issues we have faced are what you face when you are a side that have been relegated from the Premier League.
"People are working tirelessly to get things done, we have a good understanding of who wants to be here and who doesn't want to be here.
"We have willing owners who are trying their hardest and a very good recruitment team who are doing their absolute best too."
