After completing his transfer to Turf Moor on deadline day, striker Wout Weghorst spoke for the first time in Claret and Blue and explained why he felt it was the perfect fit to sign for Burnley.
Wout, welcome to Burnley Football Club…
Weghorst: “Thank you, I am delighted to be here, and I can finally now say I am a Burnley footballer.”
When did you first hear of Burnley’s interest and what enticed you to join?
Weghorst: About nine or so days ago. The feeling I got about the Club, I had some really positive talks with the Chairman and other people involved with the football club.
“I felt a lot of love and appreciation. I got a really warm feeling and that was something which made me want to sign. I looked at the Club, the history and to see if it fits me and I got a feeling it would perfectly fit.”
It is fair to say you have a great goal scoring record and I am sure that is what you now want to bring to Burnley?
Weghorst: “For sure. The main for a striker is to score goals and it is something I am good at. I have achieved that throughout my entire career. I will do everything I can to deliver and score goals for Burnley Football Club.”
You watched the Premier League growing up, there has been so many great number nines play in this league, does it excite you that you are now a number nine in the Premier League?
Weghorst: “I have always wanted to play in the Premier League, to be a number nine and to be a striker. This is a great opportunity, and I can’t wait to get started this week.”
For the Burnley fans that may have not seen you in action before, how do you describe yourself as a player?
Weghorst: “It is always difficult to describe yourself but first and foremost I am a hardworking footballer, and I will give 100% every single time I play.
“I will do everything to help the team be successful. I am a striker with a strong mentality, I score goals and that is my biggest quality. I am good in the penalty box and I can link up play.”
The qualities you mentioned, do they provide you with a great platform to play in the Premier League as you have already proven you can score goals in the Bundesliga and Eredivisie?
Weghorst: “The physical intensity will be high. This was the case in Germany too, but the Premier League is the next step and the next level. In my opinion it is the toughest competition in the World so it will be a nice challenge again. I am going to give it everything.”
Are you now looking forward to playing your part and joining up with your new teammates?
Weghorst: Absolutely. I did my research and I know our history and we played in the Europa League not so long ago. I want to be a part of this Club and not only as a footballer, but a human being, I can compare myself to Burnley in the way of thinking, our mindsets and the ambitions we have.
“We have many more matches left and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead and play a part in the next stage of the Club’s history.”
There is a lot of football left to play, with 60 points up for grabs. We are not even halfway through our season, so is this the perfect time to get behind the Club starting on Saturday against Watford?
Weghorst: “I spoke to people at the Club before I signed including the coaches and Ben Mee. There is so much positive energy, and we are confident going into the second half of the season.
“I can’t wait for Saturday after all of the talks, to now go and play football. I will train for the first time on Monday afternoon.
Finally Wout, do you have a final message to the Burnley supporters?
Weghorst: “I will give 100% for the Club and for the people here. I will always do my best and I will give everything with my heart and soul. I am a passionate player and I am sure they will all notice.
“I think this move is a nice fit and we will have a nice future together.”
