We get to know our new centre forward after he joined the Clarets from VfL Wolfsburg
Weghorst was raised in the Dutch town Borne, Overijssel and began his career with local sides RKSV and DETO Twenterand, before attracting interest from Eredivisie side Willem II, who he went on to join in 2011.
Weghorst, aged 19 at the time, left Willem II and joined second-tier side FC Emmen in the summer of 2012.
The towering forward made his debut for Emmen in August that year, against Dordrecht, which ended 1-1. Weghorst then went on to grab his first senior goal a month later, in the derby victory over Veendam.
The Dutchman finished his first season with eight goals in 28 appearances for Emmen, before hitting 12 goals in his second season at the club, where he featured 34 times.
That then resulted in Netherlands top-flight side Heracles Almelo taking the striker on a free transfer and a return to the Eredivisie for Weghorst, after an impressive two-year spell in the second tier.
Weghorst made his debut for Almelo in August 2014 against AZ Alkmaar, before scoring his first goal for the side against Ajax a month later.

The striker made his Netherlands U21 debut in October 2014, where he scored in a 5-4 defeat to Portugal.
The 6ft-6in attacker spent two seasons at Almelo, making 73 appearances and scoring 24 goals in that period and helping the side to a sixth-place finish and through the play-offs qualified for the UEFA Europa League, the first time in Almelo’s history.
After an impressive second season with Heracles Almelo, Weghorst joined fellow Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar on a four-year contract in the summer of 2016.
Weghorst made his debut for Alkmaar on the opening day of the season and found the back of the net on the same day, in a 2-2 draw with Herenveen. The striker made his UEFA Europa League debut a month later at home to Dundalk, and he then scored and grabbed his first Europa League goal against the Irish side in the reverse fixture in a 1-0 win.
The Dutch forward finished his first season with Alkmaar on 18 goals in 49 appearances and was appointed vice-captain ahead of the 2017/18 season with the club, where he began the season in blistering form with seven goals in his first 13 starts.
Weghorst followed that fine form up and had 20 goals in 29 appearances in all competitions midway through the season, resulting in his first international call-up from Ronald Koeman to the Holland side in March 2018.
He ended that fantastic season joint-third top scorer in the Eredivisie with 18 goals and registered six assists, which then saw Vfl Wolfsburg swoop in and buy the striker in June 2018.
Weghorst went on to make his first start for the German side in August against Schalke and notched his first goal for Wolfsburg in his second game, in a 3-1 victory at Bayer Leverkusen.
After enjoying an excellent run of five goals in seven games over October and November, Weghorst grabbed his first hat-trick for the side in a 5-2 win over Fortuna Dusseldorf. He finished his first season in Germany with 17 goals, joint-third in the Bundesliga goalscoring charts.
In the 2019/20 season, Weghorst produced another fine season, helping the side to a sixth-place finish and scoring 16 league goals, including a third hat-trick for Wolfsburg against Hoffenheim.
Weghorst finished the 2020/21 season with 25 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions for Wolfsburg, before being selected for Netherlands’ EURO 2020 campaign in May last year. Weghorst scored his first national team goal in a friendly against Georgia in June, before his first competitive goal for Holland against Ukraine in the group stages of the tournament.
The powerful frontman has seven goals in 24 appearances this term for Wolfsburg, with two World Cup Qualifier caps for his country.
