Burnley exited this season’s U23 Premier League Cup with a 5-2 defeat away at Peterborough United in the last of six group-stage games.
Michael Jackson’s side had led 2-1 thanks to goals from Dara Costelloe and Joe McGlynn, but the hosts took second spot in the group and progress through into the knockout stages after four unanswered goals.
Played at the Posh’s idverde training ground, Michael Jackson’s side had early appeals for a penalty waved away as Ne-Jai Tucker appeared to have been brought down inside the area.
Goalkeeper Lewis Thomas then pulled off two mightily impressive quickfire saves at the other end to deny the hosts, but Andrew Oluwabori opened the scoring for Peterborough moments later with a curled strike from the edge of the box.
After Ben Woods’ deflected effort dipped just wide of the mark, Irish forward Costelloe did pull Burnley level with a sublime strike into the top corner from inside the area when the ball fell kindly to him.
And strike partner McGlynn put the Clarets ahead six minutes later having taken advantage of a defensive error to slot home into the back of the net one-on-one with Posh ‘keeper Will Lakin.
Looking to extend their advantage, Jackson’s side pushed forward straight from the restart, but were caught cold by the hosts. With McGlynn down injured, Peterborough went on the counter-attack and grabbed an equaliser through Joseph Taylor to send the teams in level come the interval.
Taylor’s second of the afternoon came soon after the restart to put the Posh ahead, and though his penalty was saved by Clarets’ ‘keeper Thomas, Charlie O’Connell converted the rebound to double Peterborough’s advantage with 25 minutes remaining.
Midfielder Woods rattled the crossbar for Burnley with a shot from distance which had looked to be curling in, and Costelloe fired narrowly wide, before the hosts added a fifth.
O’Connell the scorer from the penalty spot given a second bite of the cherry from 12 yards out, and although Scottish youth international McGlynn came close to pulling one back prior to the full-time whistle, the Clarets bowed out of the Premier League Cup at the group stage.
