Michael Jackson’s U23 side take on Peterborough United away from home in the final match of their six-game Premier League Cup group stage knowing that only a win will see them through into the knockout stages of the competition.
Postponed three times, most recently due to Storm Eunice last week, Burnley head to the Weston Homes stadium on Thursday – February 24 – for a 1:00pm kick-off. The Clarets are currently sat bottom of their four-team group with six points from five games.
Two of the four teams in the group progress and, with Everton in second-place at the time of writing on nine points, victory for Burnley against Peterborough would see them leapfrog the Toffees courtesy of a superior goal difference.
Opponents Peterborough could also progress with a victory over the Clarets and would win the group on goal difference, toppling the current leaders Sheffield United.
A draw between the Clarets and the Posh would see both sides exit the competition.
Coincidentally, due to their Premier League 2, Division 2 trip to Stoke City being postponed on Monday, Burnley’s last outing came in the PL Cup on February 11.
Played at the Lancashire FA’s County Ground in Leyland, Jackson’s side kept their hopes of progression in the competition alive courtesy of an enthralling 2-1 win over Everton with Ashley Barnes making an appearance alongside young striker Lewis Richardson, himself making a comeback from a long-term injury.
Richardson and fellow frontman Michael Mellon have this week both signed professional deals at Turf Moor, keeping them with the club until the summer of 2025.
It was 1-1 at half time against the Toffees and it was another forward who would seal three points for the Clarets in Joe McGlynn. The Scottish youth international lobbed Toffees’ goalkeeper Billy Crellin in the last minute to take it to the final game of the group stage.
Thursday’s opponents Peterborough meanwhile – members of the Professional Development League – also featured in cup action last time out, losing 1-0 away at group leaders Sheffield United.
Angelo Cappello netted for the Blades, whose progress into the knockout stages is now confirmed as they will finish in either first or second-place dependent on the result between the Clarets and Peterborough.
Back in October’s reverse fixture, Sam Unwin was on the scoresheet for Burnley and cancelled out an early Posh penalty, but the visitors re-gained the lead just before the break to take three points from the County Ground.
Should Jackson’s side progress with victory, they would add to success in the Central League Cup earlier this month in which they have reached the knockout stages with a 100%-record in the group stages.
Full coverage of Jackson’s side’s trip to the Weston Homes stadium will be provided on Twitter via @ClaretsAcademy.
No streaming will be provided by the Clarets, however it is not yet known whether the hosts will be providing a live match feed via their own channels.
