The U21s welcome Ipswich Town to the Burnley Training Centre for their first home game of the 2024/25 season on Sunday afternoon.
Andy Farrell’s side come into the game on the back of a positive one all draw at Millwall on Tuesday but will face another tough test against the Suffolk side, who hammered Birmingham City 6-1 in their season opener.
Clarets captain Will Hugill had a mixed afternoon in South London and opened the scoring with a well taken goal 10 minutes into the second half.
Unfortunately the central midfielder, who was filling in at right-back in the absence of Alex Healy-Byrne, was later adjudged to have handled the ball in the area and Henry Hearn converted from the penalty spot.
Hugill’s afternoon ended early when he was shown a red card for a second bookable offence, and he will miss this afternoon’s match.
There were debuts for summer additions Charlie Veevers and Kamarni Ryan at The Den as Burnley showed plenty of attacking intent and were unlucky not to score more
Ipswich’s trip to Birmingham was a statement victory for a team that finished fifth in the South section of the Professional Development League last year.
Their six goals included two each for Thomas Taylor and Matty Roberts, while Ayyuba Jambang and Leon Ayinde also got on the scoresheet.
Incidentally the Tractor Boys are managed by John McGreal, who made 96 league appearances for Burnley between 2004 and 2007.
Kick-off in Padiham is 1pm and fans are welcome to attend and show their support.
