Young Clarets aim for third straight win

Burnley U21s will aim to build on last week’s emphatic victory over Queens Park Rangers when Crewe Alexandra visit the County Ground in Leyland on Tuesday night.

The young Clarets were 6-0 victors at the same venue last week, with an impressive first half seeing them take a 3-0 lead into the break courtesy of goals from Kamarni Ryan, Will Hugill, and Vernon Masara.

Andy Farrell’s side carried that intensity into the second half and after Joe Bauress added a fourth from the penalty spot, João Mendes came off the bench to net his first Burnley goal.

Ryan put the cherry on top as the clock hit 90, with the result marking back-to-back victories for the U21s.

The Clarets are now 3rd in the 11-team Professional Development League North table with eight points from six matches.

Tuesday’s opponents Crewe Alexandra have had a less favourable start, winning one and drawing another of their six league outings to date.

They have, however, grown into the campaign of late, with their two point earning displays coming in their last two matches.

Last time out was a 3-0 victory over Watford at Mornflake Stadium, in which Calum Agius scored twice and Lewis Billington headed another late on.

Andy Farrell’s side showed great character to overturn a 2-0 deficit the last time these two played each other in March of this year.

Right-back Alex Healy-Byrne kick started the comeback before half-time substitute Vernon Masara stole the show, netting a scintillating hat-trick to ensure Burnley returned home with all three points.
