Clarets leave south Yorkshire disappointed

Burnley U21s travelled to Middlewood Training Ground on Tuesday afternoon to face Sheffield Wednesday in the Professional Development League, losing 2-1.

The game started with intensity with both teams battling for possession, however, Sheffield Wednesday quickly became a threat and Benn Ward and Alex Healy-Byrne both countered Favour Onuknuli runs effectively with crucial blocks.

Joe Bevan seized the first real chance for the Clarets when Vernon Masara delivered a short cross at the edge of the box. However, his low strike narrowly missed the far post.

Mikey O'Neill attempted a shot almost immediately after, weaving his way into the box and unleashing a venomous strike that Wednesday's Jack Hall did well to catch.

Burnley goalkeeper Charlie Casper pulled off a similar save soon after from Owls captain Sam Reed's looped effort.

The Owls broke the deadlock 31 minutes in when Adam Adetoro, unmarked amidst a scramble in the box, slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

Burnley had an opportunity to counter-attack when Masara delivered a cross for Bevan, but his header just tipped over the bar.

The second half began with the same intensity and Luke Cook had the first opportunity for the home side, taking a close-range shot on which was blocked by Clarets captain Will Hugill.

Burnley were then awarded a penalty after Joe Ashton was fouled by Cian Flannery, and Tommy McDermott confidently slotted it straight through the middle to level with 15 minutes remaining.

The Owls bounced back and regained the lead with 81 minutes on the clock when Cian Maltby headed the ball powerfully past Casper, leaving him no chance.
