Young Clarets beaten at quarter-final stage

Burnley U18s were undone by two key moments as they fell to a U18 Professional Development League Cup defeat to Oxford United on Tuesday afternoon.

Tony Philliskirk’s team qualified for the knockout stages of the competition by winning all three of their Group B matches and came out of the traps quickly at the Burnley Training Centre.

Zach Johnson fired wide from the right corner of the box and captain Jack Rogers headed a presentable chance from underneath the bar over.

Oxford then took the lead with their first attacking foray of note, as Harrison Bradney worked his way through the middle before picking out the bottom right corner.

Oli Pimlott was fouled in the area soon after to give Burnley a chance to pull level, but Lucas Wane’s penalty was saved well by Oxford goalkeeper Monty Marriott.

Burnley continued to push forward, utilising diagonal passes and pace on the flanks, but couldn’t find a leveller before the break.

Luca Jackson was introduced at halftime, with Brandon Pouani and Benji Wetshi coming on just after the hour.

It was Wetshi who drew the Clarets level, finishing from close range at the second attempt after the ball had ricocheted around the area.

Parity lasted just six minutes, however, as Oxford’s Aidan Elliott-Wheeler met a cutback from the byline to beat Burnley ‘keeper Jon Vilar Robinson.

The young Clarets continued to push for a second equaliser with Wetshi almost netting again in a goalmouth scramble.

Logan Carlin then fired over in the eighth minute of stoppage time as the game ended in defeat.
