Owen Dodgson believes that 'playing as many games as possible' is the key to his development & learning and that's exactly what the 20-year-old is currently doing on his loan move in the Scottish Premier League.
The Lancaster-born full-back joined Burnley FC's strategic partner club side Dundee on loan until the end of the season in January, alongside Clarets teammates Dara Costelloe and Michael Mellon.
Dodgson has started in five league fixtures since moving to the Scot Foam Stadium, after being recalled from a spell at Barnsley. The defender is enjoying life in Scotland so far and feels it will benefit him not just as a player, but as a person too.
"First of all, it’s been a really good experience so far for me and I think it will not only help me as a player but as a person as well. It’s obviously my first time alone away from home, so it’s good to kind of get used to living by myself. Although, I am living with Dara (Costelloe) at the moment but it’s good living with someone I know.
“I think it’s good being up here with Dara and Mike (Mellon), we all get along really well. We’re all enjoying it and I think it’s vital having a good team around you and that’s what we have here.
“I’m playing plenty of games, enjoying playing football and I think that’s the main thing for someone at my age. Just get as many games as possible and that's key for my development and learning.
“I’m enjoying it, it’s a good group of lads, a good club to be at and a really decent environment to be involved in."
Dodgson spent the first half of the campaign on loan in Sky Bet League One with the Tykes, featuring 13 times before returning to the Burnley Training Centre prior to the move to Dundee.
The left-back says the two league's are 'similar' in terms of opposition, but the youngster is relishing the opportunity of playing at Celtic Park later this month before facing Rangers in March.
“If I was to compare the difference, I would say it’s quite similar to League One. We've played away at Hearts, Aberdeen and they have been really good challenging games.
“I’m really looking forward to playing Celtic and Rangers in the coming weeks. There’s some really good teams in this league and some tough players to come up against but it’s really for my development and learning."
The defender has played in all but one game since arriving in Scotland, facing Hearts, Aberdeen, Livingston and St. Mirren and the supporters have been a standout feature for him.
“I think our fans have been very good and supportive. At away games they are really loud and get behind the team which is a massive boost away from home.
“Even on the other hand, Hearts brought quite a few fans & were decent and it’s good playing in an environment like that having them against you.
“To have support week in week out is vital and the Dundee supporters have been class. It all adds to the experience of the loan and playing in front of loud and big crowds."
