Young Clarets earn second PL2 win of season

The long trip south was worthwhile for Burnley U21s thanks to an emphatic 4-1 victory over Norwich City on Friday night.

After Joe Bevan opened the scoring it was level at the break, but Kian McMahon-Brown restored our lead before centre-back Jesse Williams netted twice to add the cherry on top of an important win.

Manager Andy Farrell made three changes to the side that started Tuesday night’s National League Cup tie at Tamworth, with Oisin Cooney returning in goal.

Williams was named as one of the three starting centre-backs, while Bevan led the line alongside McMahon-Brown.

In a quiet start to proceedings it was Norwich who had the first attack in anger after 11 minutes. Having been played through by Aidan Bridge, Ken Aboh pulled his effort wide of the right-hand post.

Finley Welch missed a similar chance not too long afterwards and the hosts’ inability to find a finish cost them when the Clarets opened the scoring against the run of play.

Ellis Clark found himself with space on the inside left channel and squared for Bevan, whose confident first-time finish found the bottom right corner.

The lead lasted just eight minutes, though, as Norwich broke quickly and Aboh was able to finish one-on-one against Cooney this time around.

The hosts sent a couple of speculative efforts well wide of the target before half-time, with the two teams going into the break level.

Farrell’s team talk seemed to instil extra life into his players, with Clark finding the side netting and Murray Campbell having an effort blocked before McMahon-Brown made it 2-1.

The Republic of Ireland youth international rounded off a counter-attack that was led by Charlie Veevers with a trademark dink over Norwich ‘keeper Rylee Mitchell.

It was 3-1 on the hour when Jack McEvilly nodded Veevers’ deep free-kick into the path of Williams, who finished instinctively.

Farrell made his first change of the night during the celebrations, replacing Bevan with Vernon Masara.

Norwich huffed and puffed but were unable to work Cooney until the 74th minute, when Alan Domeracki’s shot from the edge of the box was straight down the teenager’s throat.

A triple change with 10 minutes of regular time remaining saw Marley Leuluai, McMahon-Brown and Veevers make way for Joe Ashton, Zach Johnson and Tom Tweedy respectively.

The fourth official indicated that there would be six minutes of added time and it was with 92 on the clock that Williams scored his second and the team’s fourth of the night.

Burnley caused havoc from a set piece once again and after Campbell made contact wit a corner, the ball sat up nicely for his fellow defender to sweep home.

The result moves the team up to 20th in the 29-team PL2 table, and next up is the visit of Birmingham City on Friday 31st October.
