Quarter final details confirmed

Tom Tweedy booked Burnley’s place in the quarter finals of the Premier League Cup as the U21s beat Sunderland 1-0 on Monday night.

The Welshman got on the end of a Julien Vetro cross in the first half to end a run of three straight defeats in all competitions.

There was just one change to the side that started last week’s Professional Development League match against Sheffield Wednesday, with Tommy McDermott replacing Basilio Socoliche.

Sunderland almost made the perfect start at the Grant Store Victory Park Stadium in Chorley, with Clarets ‘keeper Lewis Forshaw forced into a save after just 20 seconds.

The visitors continued that momentum and after Luke Bell stabbed wide from a corner, Tymur Tutierov struck a post following a strong run down the left flank.

However, it was Andy Farrell’s side who broke the deadlock on 18 minutes.

Good work from Vetro allowed him to deliver across the face of goal, and Tweedy was on hand to squeeze in his 10th goal of the season at the back post.

The rest of the first half was well contested and both teams picked up cautions, with Vetro and Veevers going into the book for Burnley.

Sunderland’s Jack Whittaker came closest to finding the second goal of the night when he curled wide of the top right corner, but Burnley took a one-goal lead into the interval.

Much like they did in the first half, the Black Cats started quickly after the restart and fired off three shots in the first 10 minutes. One of those efforts saw Hamzat Balogun head off the line.

That dominance of the ball continued and Farrell turned to his bench for the first time in the 67th minute, with Socoliche replacing Vetro and Logan Pye making way for Alex Healy-Byrne.

The changes seemed to give the young Clarets a boost and after Socoliche curled narrowly wide of the right hand post, Tweedy hit a presentable chance into the Sunderland ‘keeper’s arms.

Kamarni Ryan then made way for U18s striker Benji Wetshi and Brandon Ly later replaced Veevers as Farrell set his side up to defend their lead.

Their resoluteness shone right the way through until the final whistle and following an unbeaten group stage campaign, Burnley are now just one of eight teams left in the competition.
