Clarets take on the Baggies in midweek clash

Burnley are back in Sky Bet Championship action on Tuesday night, as the Clarets host West Bromwich Albion at Turf Moor.

Scott Parker's side were convincing 4-0 winners last time out against Luton Town and the win over the Hatters extended the unbeaten run in the league to 23 matches.

The Clarets could move up to to 1st place on Tuesday night with a victory, as the home side look to defend their undefeated home record against the Baggies.

West Brom head to Lancashire in 6th place after their win over QPR on Saturday and Tony Mowbray's side are unbeaten in their last four games.

The opposition

Albion have spent the majority of their recent years across the Premier League and Championship, after five promotions to and five relegations from the top-flight since the year 2000.

Prior to being relegated in 2018, West Brom enjoyed an eight-year spell in the Premier League after being promoted in 2010, which included three top-10 finishes and an EFL Cup quarter-final place.

It only took the Baggies two seasons to return to the big time, after a second place finish in the 2019/20 season saw Albion back in the top-flight, but an immediate relegation in the first season back, which was behind-closed-doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic, saw West Brom return to the Championship the following year.

The Midlands side are now in their fourth consecutive campaign in the Sky Bet Championship since relegation in 2021, but there has been progress year on year, as a 10th placed finish in the first season back was followed up by a 9th place and 5th place finish respectively.

Under Carlos Corberán, the Baggies started the current season strongly with five wins from the opening six league games, but that run came to an end with defeat at Sheffield Wednesday, followed by a loss at Middlesbrough and then five consecutive draws with only two goals scored in those five games.

A change in the hot seat saw Corberán depart the Hawthorns just before Christmas, with current boss Tony Mowbray announced as Head Coach in January.

In the away dugout

With nearly 900 games as a manager under his belt and a wealth of experience, Tony Mowbray returned to West Brom in January following Carlos Corberán's departure, after previously managing the club between 2006-2009.

Mowbray, who enjoyed an illustrious playing career for the likes of Middlesbrough, Celtic and Ipswich Town, began his coaching career with the Tractor Boys a couple of years after retiring.

Starting out as a first team coach with Town, Mowbray had a brief spell as caretaker boss in charge of four games, before joining Hibernian and being appointed his first managerial role in May 2004.

He spent just over two years with Hibs, before taking charge of the Baggies for his first spell, which saw Mowbray guide the Albion to promotion in his second season, before moving on in the summer of 2009 to join former club Celtic.

After being dismissed from Celtic Park nine months after joining, Mowbray returned to another one of his former club's, Middlesbrough, where he managed over 150 games in a three year spell.

Mowbray had a break of just over a year before taking his next job, which was an 18 month period with Coventry City in League One, before a five-year spell in charge of Blackburn Rovers between 2017 and 2022.

August 2022 saw Mowbray back in work, after being appointed Head Coach of Sunderland, where he guided the Black Cats to the play-offs in his first season, before departing in December 2023.

It didn't take long for the former Boro star to be back in work though, after joining Birmingham City in January 2024, however Mowbray's time at St Andrews came to a premature end a few months later due to health and medical reasons.

A year on from then, Mowbray is back in work and now looking to secure a play-off place for the Baggies in the Championship.
