Burnley’s U21 side lost out 6-0 to Hull City at the County Ground in Professional Development League action.
Goals from James Scott, Jim Simms, Harry Wood, Harvey Vale, Oliver Green and substitute Billy Chadwick condemned the Clarets to a third defeat in eight outings.
In action for the second time in five days, Burnley made three changes to the side that drew 1-1 at Stoke City in the Premier League Cup with U18 Brad Grant coming into the side to replace senior head Matt Lowton.
Denis Franchi and Ne-Jai Tucker also regained their places from the start as Lewis Thomas and Dara Costelloe dropped out. There were places on the bench for Joe Westley, who scored a hat-trick for the U18s in their win at Hull on Saturday, alongside fellow youth-teamer Nathan James.
City meanwhile named a more experienced side, including full back Josh Emmanuel and Chelsea loanee Vale.
First Half
The Clarets saw an early chance fall their way as Michael Mellon intercepted a poor backpass before seeing a strike from the edge of the area blocked behind by Tigers defender Green.
Soon after, Hull got themselves in front via Scott’s header from a corner which was whipped into the middle of the box. Franchi had appeared to have been fouled, but the goal stood, and the visitors led.
They then doubled their advantage as Simms intercepted a backpass in the six-yard box and saw the ball bounce into the bottom corner past a helpless Franchi.
And the third came from the penalty spot after Scott had been brought down as Wood slotted home from 12 yards out
It was four before the break as Vale carved out an opportunity to grab his second of the contest 32 minutes in, and Burnley also saw Alex Healy-Byrne forced off through injury prior to the half-time whistle with Frankie Deane replacing him.
Second Half
With the first chance of note at the restart, City added their fifth as Green got on the ball in the box and took it towards the byline, deceiving Franchi to guide into an empty net.
Searching for a consolation, the Clarets created opportunities for Marcel Lewis and Tucker, but neither were able to find the back of the net after some nice build-up play.
Lewis also saw another effort held by Hull goalkeeper Harry Fisk before the visitors made it six through substitute Chadwick who broke through on goal to slot home on 72 minutes.
Little action of note followed in the minutes that remained, with Burnley now back in action next Tuesday – 8th November – when they take on Peterborough United at the Weston Homes Stadium (1.30pm KO).
