Burnley’s U21 side continue their campaign in the Professional Development League on Tuesday afternoon – 8th November – when they travel to take on Peterborough United at the idVerde Training Ground (1.30pm KO).
In what will be the Clarets last league away game this calendar year, the Clarets will look to continue their impressive away record this term down in Cambridgeshire having lost only once on the road all season so far.
Tuesday’s game also brings an opportunity to go in search of a first win in four having lost out to both Sheffield United & Hull City in recent weeks, sandwiched by a 1-1 draw at Stoke City in the Premier League Cup.
Dara Costelloe was on target against both the Blades and Potters, but missed last week's loss to Hull due to illness.
He could come back into contention on Tuesday in Cambridgeshire along with new signing Renaldo Torraj. The Albanian youth international is now officially a Claret after a successful trial with the Club.
A total of eight from the U21s squad are now out on loan with Clubs across the Football League & non-league pyramid, including striker Joe McGlynn who netted for Hyde United for the second week running, sending the Tigers top of the Northern Premier League’s Premier Division.
With Lukas Jensen (Accrington Stanley), Bobby Thomas (Bristol Rovers) & Lewis Richardson (Grimsby Town) all excluded due to their loans being in the EFL, all players on youth loans are eligible to play for the Clarets U21s as well as their loan Clubs.
Burnley sit 4th in the Northern Section of the PDL at the time of writing, with games in hand on all of the teams above them, and could move back up to 2nd with a win on the road against the Posh.
Former Stoke & Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Matthew Etherington is in charge of Tuesday’s opponents, who sit 6th in the Northern Section, four points behind Burnley having already played a game more.
Pictured below in action for the Potters against Burnley, Etherington has had a caretaker spell in charge of the first team at the Weston Homes Stadium previously, and last time out saw his U21s team win 3-1 away from home against bottom of the table Sheffield Wednesday.
Welsh forward Joe Taylor handed United an early lead in Yorkshire, and having been pegged back to head into the break level, Kellan Hickinson netted before Taylor was on target oncemore to seal the three points.
And despite being ahead of Peterborough in the standings, Burnley head to Cambridgeshire with prior knowledge of their opponents strength from the pair’s meetings in the Premier League Cup group stages last season.
Then at U23 level, the Posh took all six points from the two games between the two sides, first winning 2-1 at the County Ground in October 2021 before running out 5-2 victors on home soil in February 2022 in what was the last of six group stage games.
That afternoon, goals from Dara Costelloe & Scotland youth international McGlynn had seen Burnley head into the break 2-1 to the good, but four unanswered second half goals from United saw them head through to the knockout stages of the competition as the Clarets bowed out.
