Burnley’s U21 side are in the capital on Monday afternoon – 3rd April – where they face Millwall in Professional Development League action at The Den (3pm KO).
The Clarets head south with five games of the regular league season still to play, and are still in with an opportunity of a top-two finish in the Northern Section which would see them progress into the national play-offs.
Only the top two from the north and top two from the south respectively qualify for those four play-off places, and with Sheffield United having already won the northern title, it’s a race for 2nd.
Last Monday, Burnley drew 1-1 with Peterborough United on home soil with captain Dan Sassi on the scoresheet. Though the performance was a dominant one throughout, the result means that the U21s must head to Millwall in search of a first win in four.
It leaves the Clarets 4th in the standings, two points off both Hull City & Wigan Athletic in the spots directly above. Those two sides are separated only by goal difference at present.
Monday’s opponents Millwall meanwhile are sat joint-top of the Southern Section in the PDL - alongside Bristol City - having taken 45 points from their 22 games so far, an average of over two points per game.
Losing in the league only three times so far this season, the Lions beat Colchester United 2-1 away from home in their last outing.
Having fallen behind to an own goal early on, Kevin Nugent’s men hit back quickly through Frankie Hvid and went on to grab a winner in the second half through Tom Leahy.
This meeting will be a first at this level between the two sides since the 2019/20 campaign, which would go on to get curtailed due to the COVID Pandemic. It ended 1-1 in South London that August afternoon.
