Burnley’s U21 side are on the road again this week, crossing the Welsh border to face Cardiff City on Tuesday afternoon (August 30) in a 13:00 kick-off.
Three games In, the side are still searching for their first points of the campaign, losing out 3-0 to Queens Park Rangers last Monday despite dominating for much of the game.
With the first team also in action on Tuesday at Turf Moor against Millwall, and a number of the U21s involved with the squad, the Clarets are expected to line up young at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium.
16-year-old midfielder Joe Bauress has started all three games for the U21s so far this season, while a number of other youngsters have also been involved sporadically.
Fellow midfielder Frankie Deane played the full 90 minutes on Saturday as the U18s beat Charlton Athletic 2-1, and he’s expected to play again for the U21s against the Bluebirds.
This will be the first time that Burnley have gone up against their Welsh opponents at U23/U21 level since August 2018, when the Clarets ran out 4-1 winners on home turf.
With the makeup of the Professional Development League, teams in the Northern Section only play those from the Southern Section once every season, home or away.

Subsequently, during the 2019/20 season, the pair were pencilled in to face off in April 2019. When the COVID Pandemic curtailed the season however, that game didn’t take place.
And as a result, this is Burnley’s first trip to Cardiff since a 2-1 defeat in February 2017, with that game coming in the Premier League Cup group stage.
This term, the Bluebirds’ U21s have started strong, winning both of the games that they’ve played in the league so far, 2-1 at home to Peterborough United & 3-0 away at Sheffield United.
Most recently however, Darren Purse’s side began their Premier League Cup campaign with a 1-0 defeat at Reading in the group stage of the competition.
Purse – who was a well-travelled defender across the Football League during his own playing career and spent four seasons as a Bluebird – was appointed in his current post back in December 2021.
Coverage of tomorrow’s game from South Wales will come via Twitter - @ClaretsAcademy – while a report will follow on the Burnley FC website post-match.
