Young Clarets fall to defeat against Black Cats

Tony Philliskirk's side suffered their first defeat of the season, after Sunderland ran away 2-0 winners on a sunny afternoon in the north east.

Late strikes from Ben Williams and Caden Kelly sealed the hosts' first victory of the season at the Academy of Light.

The visitors started bright and had an early opportunity to take the lead, as Dane McCullough drove towards goal, before striking just wide of the post.

Minutes later the Clarets had another chance, as the ball fell to Tremaine Eastmond inside the area, who saw his effort blocked on the line.

Chances were then minimal for both sides, as Sunderland settled into it after a dominant Burnley start.

And with the scores level at the break, it was Philliskirk’s side that came out on the front foot and had a glorious opportunity on the hour.

Will Couch weaved into the area unmarked, before firing at the Sunderland goalkeeper in a one-on-one, who denied the forward excellently with his legs.

But it was The Black Cats who pounced on the opportunity to take the lead with 15 minutes left on the clock, as right-back GOALSCORER finished from close range at the back post.

And Sunderland then doubled their lead shortly after, as GOALSCORER 2 broke into the box and slotted home past Harry Moss.

The Clarets then had the ball in the back of the net in search of a fightback, but the referee had blown for a Burnley free-kick, as Couch was through on goal and finished, with the goal controversially ruled out.

BURNLEY: Moss, Williams, Sassi, Leckie, McCullough, Etaluku, Bauress (Behan 67), Ward, Walters (Coppack 67), Eastmond, Couch.
