Johann Berg Gudmundsson hopes the Clarets’ Carabao Cup success can be the catalyst for lift-off in the Premier League.
Burnley knocked top-flight opposition out of the cup in the shape of Newcastle United thanks to a penalty shoot-out success at St James’ Park.
And Sean Dyche’s men now switch their focus to Sunday and the chance to get their first points on the board this season against Leeds United.
“It was a good win (at Newcastle). You want to go into every game in every competition and win that game and that’s what we did,” said Gudmundsson, who was given a breather for Wednesday night's win on Tyneside following an impressive start to the season.
“It was a tough first round to go to Newcastle but we did the job which was positive. We stuck in there and got the win.
“It lifts everything, but we know the Premier League is a different competition and we want to get the first win there at the weekend.
“They are a good side and it’s going to be tough for us but I think we’ve got a good opportunity at home.
“I think the crowd will definitely be up for this game. With the fans back we need them to help us to get the points at home and we’ll look to start that on Sunday.”
The Clarets have lost their first two league games but have looked in decent form in the opening weeks of the season, leading against Brighton on the opening day before stretching Liverpool for lengthy periods of a 2-0 loss last weekend.
Leeds have taken one point from their opening two fixtures – as well as progressing in the Carabao Cup with a 3-0 victory over League One Crewe.
And after losing twice to the Yorkshiremen last season, Gudmundsson is keen to reverse the record and pick up a first win ahead of the international break which will see him look to help Iceland secure valuable points from three World Cup qualifiers.
“They did the double last season but especially at Elland Road I think we deserved something from the game,” added the Clarets’ wingman.
“The game at Turf Moor wasn’t good enough so we want to come back and get our first win in the Premier League, which is the most important thing.
“I think every team in the league wants to get the first win as quickly as possible and we are the same.
“But we’re not panicking. The first two performances of the season were good ones.
“We can take a few positives, so we just need to add that one step more and get the three points and I am quite confident we’ll do that on Sunday.”
