Tony Philliskirk’s youth team capped off a week-long training camp in St Andrew’s with a 2-1 win over Dundee United.
Having drawn games earlier in the week against both Kilmarnock – 2-2 – and Queen’s Park – 3-3 – Wiktor Gromek netted a first half brace against the Tangerines to seal a deserved win.
First Half
With Joe Westley firing a shot narrowly wide within the opening 30 seconds north of the border, Burnley were on the front foot from the off and took the lead on the two-minute mark.
Brad Grant whipped a free-kick into the area, with Polish youth international Gromek sweeping home on the volley.
Grant’s set piece deliveries were causing United trouble, and striker Westley almost doubled the advantage soon after, heading the full-back’s corner just over the bar.
Clarets goalkeeper Jon Ander Vilar Robinson wasn’t troubled in the opening 45 minutes, with Adam Carnwath’s strike wide of the mark the closest United came to a leveller.
And with the last kick of the first half, Gromek did make it 2-0. Grant was involved again, providing the cross which was headed into the path of Gromek to find the back of the net with a ferocious half volley.
Second Half
Starting strong again at the restart, Philliskirk’s side saw Vernon Masara volley over the bar on the stretch while Ryan Tioffo also glanced an effort wide with his head after another well-worked set piece.
The Tangerines halved the deficit on the hour-mark through Stuart Heenan whose low drilled strike flew into the bottom corner of the net, with the Clarets making six pre-planned changes in the aftermath.
One of those was a Trialist, and on 76 minutes, he stooped low to meet Westley’s cross into the area, but could only guide a header into the side netting.
Chasing his hat-trick, Gromek saw a strike held by United ‘keeper McCabe who also kept out another effort from the Trialist minutes later.
At the other end, substitute U16s goalkeeper Kane Mavrantziotis Bove then produced two fine saves in quick succession to put the rubber stamp on a first pre-season victory for the Clarets.
First holding onto an effort from the edge of the box, the youngster then denied Sean Borland at point-blank range, and that was to be the last action of note in St Andrew’s.
All at the Club would like to thank the University of St Andrew’s for their hospitality during the course of this week.
The youth team will return home tomorrow, taking on Millersville University at the Burnley Training Centre on Tuesday – 2 August – and Southampton at St George’s Park on Saturday – 6 August, before their season begins on August 13 with the visit of Bristol City.
