Burnley kicked-off the new Sky Bet Championship season with a 1-0 victory after Ian Maatsen’s first-half goal earned Vincent Kompany a winning start as manager away at Huddersfield Town.
Kompany handed out six debuts including to academy graduate Dara Costelloe who started up front.
Maatsen struck Burnley’s opener with 18 minutes played, which proved to be the deciding moment in West Yorkshire and secured maximum points.
First-half
Having navigated through the opening minutes, Burnley grew into the contest, and following a fine pass which found Ashley Barnes, the forward was denied from close-range by a challenge from Tom Lees.
The Clarets forced Lee Nicholls into action soon after, with Josh Cullen’s shot from the edge of the box straight at the Terriers stopper after good work from Maatsen.

Burnley's fine start was rewarded on 18 minutes as Maatsen bent a right-footed strike into Nicholls’ bottom right-corner after Barnes' flick in the box.
Minutes later it was nearly two for Kompany’s men, as Jack Cork’s lofted ball over the home defence dropped to Connor Roberts, however the right-back’s strike was smothered well by Nicholls.
Roberts was well-positioned to charge down Josh Koroma’s effort, as Danny Schofield’s Terriers searched for an equaliser.
With five minutes remaining of the first-half, Maatsen drove a cross into a dangerous area aimed for Costelloe who could not find the target.

Second-half
Burnley were put under pressure early on after half-term, when Ollie Turton’s deep in-swinging cross was headed away by Roberts under pressure from Danny Ward, with captain Cork able to steer the loose ball from Duane Holmes.
Arijanet Muric was called upon to punch clear Sorba Thomas’ free-kick high into a crowded box, as the Clarets had to manage a difficult period.
Up the other end, Josh Brownhill hit over Nicholls’ crossbar from distance after good Clarets build-up play.
Scott Twine was introduced as a 69th minute substitute, with the attacking midfielder coming on in place of Samuel Bastien.
Muric watched Ward’s rising strike go narrowly wide of his upright as Huddersfield were pushing to restore parity.
Shortly after, Charlie Taylor turned Brownhill’s initial corner back into the six-yard box, with an unmarked Taylor Harwood-Bellis heading straight at Nicholls at the back post.

Kompany’s second change saw Vitinho make his Clarets debut, becoming the first Brazilian player to represent the club when he replaced Costelloe.
And Vitinho almost made an immediate impact, driving a fierce half-volley which was blocked by a Huddersfield man.
Burnley went incredibly close to adding to their lead in the 85th minute, as Twine’s free-kick beat the wall and hit Nicholls’ right-hand post before being cleared.
The Clarets had to overcome five minutes of additional time to start the campaign in the perfect possible way.
