Manager Vincent Kompany was pleased as his Burnley side got their Sky Bet Championship season off to a winning start at Huddersfield Town on Friday night.
Ian Maatsen’s 18th minute strike was enough to secure three points in West Yorkshire, and Kompany spoke about various match topics following full-time.
Kompany on the result:
“Winning away, keeping a clean sheet, and creating chances against a team that has been at Wembley last season, it’s a decent start and we have to keep going.
“I said to the lads after the game, they could have lost this game and I still would have been proud of them with what I’m looking for this season, if you want to go through 46 games, the lads have got to work hard, show real togetherness, and cover the ground
“I get as much pleasure from the chances we created and the way the lads did it and how aggressive we were by picking up loose balls, someone was always there to help, we had to dig deep, and we did it and they can be proud of themselves.
“I hope that what people take away from this game is that they saw hard work, and what I can see is that the fans enjoyed it and it really felt like a good football match for the Football Club, and hopefully we can enjoy many more.”
Kompany on the performance:
“The players have given me incredible focus and hard work throughout pre-season and they deserved the result and we just need to see the team effort.
“We defended well, we stopped crosses at the source, we put pressure on the ball, and we did it for 95 minutes. When we had the ball, we made good use of it and that kept momentum from the opposition.
“It’s good to score the first goal as a team effort, I’m used to having a team where the goals are shared around and I’m hoping that the goals are spread around.”
Kompany on the fans:
“The fans will be here for us in good times and bad times, so let’s just enjoy this journey and come out the other end with a team that keeps growing.”
Kompany on upcoming games:
“We have three games where we are going to find out a lot about ourselves. We’ve had Huddersfield who have caused us problems, then Luton next week and Watford, but we’re going to give it our best.”
