Sander Berge is confident that the point earnt at Nottingham Forest on Monday is a 'big boost' for the Clarets heading into Saturday night's clash with Manchester United.
The midfielder was introduced on the hour mark just after Callum Hudson-Odoi's equaliser and the 25-year-old looked to have set-up the winning goal shortly after only to be ruled out for an adjudged handball in the build-up to the goal.
Despite the frustration to have not left Nottinghamshire with all three points, Berge says the quality within the squad is starting to build and believes the team are on the right path to starting picking up results.
The Norwegian said: "It's a step by step process. There's a lot of new players that have come in and connections on the pitch are beginning to click and you can see that.
"You can see the quality building now and it will come I'm sure. We believe in our identity and what we do and if we do that, the results will come.
"The lads showed great character tonight, it's not an easy place to come but we wanted to show what we're about but we stood up well and we're chasing the winner in the end.
"We never sit back and want to settle for a draw, we always want the three points and I think we showed that tonight, there's a lot to improve on but it's a step in the right direction for us and a big boost going into Saturday"
Berge added: "We've been working really hard on the training ground and I think the last few games have been a learning process for us all.
"I think we're on the right path for sure and tonight show's what we're capable of going forward, even at 1-1 with Forest having the momentum we were going for the winner.
"It's a boost for the group going into Saturday night, a right step in the right direction and it's a marathon not a sprint, there's a long way to go."
Berge's introduction in the second half looked to have been an instant impact after teeing up Lyle Foster to slot home a second of the night 10 minutes after coming on.
After the goal was initially given, referee Rob Jones was asked to check the VAR monitor pitchside, in which the official ruled the goal out after claiming that Berge had handled the ball in the build-up to squaring for Foster.
Post-match, Berge gave his views on the incident: "It was a 50/05 duel with me and McKenna and I think i was in a normal running pattern to be honest, I didn't feel the ball hit my arm.
"It seemed to be a natural movement and then the ref asked me after the goal if it hit my arm and I wasn't sure at all being honest.
"I haven't seen it back yet on video, so it's hard to say, but it's done now."
