Burnley FC’s U21s side suffered a 4-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the Professional Development League at the Burnley Training Centre.
The Owls opened the scoring in the 32nd minute as Joey Phuti hammered the ball into the back of the net past Charlie Casper, after finding space in the box.
Bailey Cadamarteri netted the second after the break, latching onto a short pass before rounding Casper to score.
Favour Onukwuli made it three before Cadamarteri bagged his second of the game with five minutes to go.
The U21s made two changes from their victory against Leicester City, with Casper replacing Denis Franchi in goal and Lewis Richardson coming in for Kian Le Fondre from the start.
First Half
Burnley started on the front foot in the torrential rain as Clarets forward Lewis Richardson got the first chance on goal, but his strike was comfortably held by Pierce Charles.
Moments after, top scorer Joe Westley headed the ball towards goal, but his effort flew inches over the top.
As Wednesday fought to find a way back into the game, an Owls winger was fouled inside the box, leaving Casper to face Cadamarteri from the penalty spot.
Casper did well to keep out the spot kick, but shortly after, the Owls took the lead through Joey Phuti, as he hammered past the Clarets stopper into the top corner.
Second Half
Richardson tried his luck again as he sent a free kick into the box that evaded the Wednesday defence but bounced all the way through without a touch for a goal kick.
The visitors doubled their lead soon after, as Cadamarteri reacted to a short pass and nicked the ball ahead of Casper, to round the Burnley ‘keeper and tap into an empty net.
Seconds after Burnley made their first change, with Kian Le Fondre replacing Tom Tweedy, Onukwuli drove down the left wing and cut inside before firing the ball past Casper to add a third.
The Clarets came close to finding a way back into the game through Basilio Rieno Socoliche but he wasn’t able to find the target as his strike flew over the bar.
But it was Cadamarteri who netted again, with a bullet header into the bottom corner securing the victory for the Owls.
The U21s are back in action next Monday when they travel to face Wigan Athletic in the Professional Development League (1pm BST).
