Jay Rodriguez was delighted to play a key part in Burnley’s victory over Norwich on Tuesday evening, which saw him score his 50th league goal for his hometown club.
The striker spoke post-match about the penalty mindset, taking the Championship one game at a time and the importance of the support from the fans.
Rodriguez on the result:
“It’s a really good feeling, against a good side Norwich, we know how good they are. I thought we put our game onto them as soon as the whistle blew. I think we stuck to our game plan, and we got the win in the end which was really important.
“We know that they are a great side, and we were moving them side to side, we know something’s going to bend and break and luckily, we got the penalty. I think we got into good positions to hurt them, we just weren’t clinical enough I thought, but that’s just one of them games sometimes. We’ll take that and move on.”
Rodriguez on the penalty:
“You know you pick your spot early and just hit it clean and thankfully it went in. You practice them for those moments and hit it clean, if the keeper saves it then it’s one of them but at least you’ve made him work and thankfully it went in and got us the three points.
“I always pick my spot, hit it clean and I think you should be scoring. It’s not always the case, I’ve missed a couple in my career and thankfully I hit it clean which was nice.”
Rodriguez on his 50th league goal for Burnley:
“Things like this, I’ve always said it I feel privileged to represent this club and to be from here. My 50th league goal, for me to get one goal, if you’d have told me that before as a kid, I wouldn’t have believed you. I’ve got to keep going, I’ve still got a lot to improve, and I keep on a level that you don’t take anything for granted.”
Rodriguez on the league:
“This league is so tough; we’ve got to rest now and recover, and focus is straight onto Reading. We know they are a great side and if you get too high and too low with things like the manager keeps saying you’ve just got to keep on a level and the next focus now is the next game.
“The table is really tight; we’ve just got to be on our own journey and not worry too much about other teams. Just focus on the next game.”
Rodriguez on the home crowd support:
“It means a lot to the players and staff when you hear them throughout the night, chanting and pushing us forward. Hopefully we give them things they’re really enjoying at the moment. We can hopefully carry on continuing that connection together, it means a lot to us.”
