Connor Roberts said he'd describe his strike against Middlesbrough at Turf Moor as a 'wonderful kick' following the Clarets draw against Michael Carrick's side on Friday evening.

Pleased to net his first of the season and his third against Boro, he said with the chances both sides had the game could have gone either way but he's pleased that the team managed to grind out an important point in the challenging weather conditions.

“It was tough conditions, two decent football teams came here tonight to try and get the win. I think we’ll both be a little disappointed we couldn’t nick it, we huffed, and we puffed, but we couldn’t quite get the second goal. But happy with a fairly decent point against a really good team in Boro.”

Scott Parker's team went behind 13 minutes in, something the side aren't too familiar with having kept 12 clean sheets so far this campaign. How did Roberts think the squad reacted to going a goal down?

“I thought it was really good. Up until the goal, I wouldn’t say they were dominating but we weren’t really dominating, it was a 50/50 game. When they scored, I thought we picked it up, we started to get some more final third entries, get a lot of crosses, a lot of set pieces, corners. We huffed and we puffed like I said, and we scored our goal, we just couldn’t get that second one which is disappointing.

“I’m also a bit disappointed that we conceded a goal because we’ve been doing so well over the last few weeks and months but hopefully on Tuesday night, we can get back to clean sheets and score a couple more goals.”

And it was Roberts who brought the sides level in style...

“It was a wonderful kick shall we say! It opened up and I’ve been a bit disappointed that I haven’t scored this season yet. I thought I may as well stranger things have happened, so it came off the left bunion and maybe a bit of wind assisted, it went in! So yes, delighted with that. I think it’s my third goal against Middlesbrough, so I enjoy scoring against them. I’m happy to get it and give ourselves a point as well.”

It was tough conditions on the night with heavy rain and strong winds swirling, against a Middlesbrough side who have won four of their last five league games, does the hard earned point become even more important taking these elements into account?

“Yes, it could have easily gone the other way. I wouldn’t say they really dominated us but we both had chances, they could have scored theirs, they had one at the end, a couple at the end and if that goes in then I’m standing here absolutely devastated that we’ve lost. So, a point’s a point and I mentioned in my last interview after Stoke that we have to get that consistency and drawing a game isn’t dropping that consistency. So we have to build on it. Hopefully if we come back here on Tuesday night and get the win then everyone’s like it’s a really good point in difficult conditions so we move on.”

Finally, Roberts was grateful to the fans who were in great form despite the bad weather.

“They were great to be fair, credit to them. Hopefully the Derby game it isn’t quite as bad, and we can enjoy ourselves a little bit more and not get soaking wet!

“They were really good today, I think they could see that the boys were trying, trying to get that second goal and even trying to get the first one before we got it. Hopefully they’re proud of us and they’ve had a well spent Friday evening.”
