Young Clarets head to the south coast in Premier League Cup

Burnley U21s will be aiming to book their place in the knockout stages of the Premier League Cup when they take on Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon.

Andy Farrell’s team have enjoyed a perfect run in this competition to date, winning all four matches with an aggregate score of 14-2.

They come into this lengthy trip on the back of an impressive 8-1 victory over Birmingham City in the Professional Development League on Tuesday.

Joe Westley’s four-goal haul was the main talking point, with Tommy McDermott also netting a brace on an entertaining night in Leyland.

Further goals came from Charlie Veevers and João Mendes as the Clarets ran riot.

Their Premier League Cup campaign has seen them beat Luton Town twice, Reading and Brighton so far.

The reverse fixture with the Seagulls was played at Turf Moor in October, and Tom Tweedy kick started the scoring before a second-half own goal sealed the three points.

All nine group winners, alongside the seven best runners up, will progress to the knockout stages.

As things stand, Burnley are top of Group G with 12 points. That means a point from this game would ensure we finish top of the group.

Brighton’s Category One status means they play in Premier League 2, which is the highest rated league in the country at U21s level.

Led by head coach Shannon Ruth, the Seagulls are 3rd in the PL2 table with 20 points from nine matches.

They also compete in the English National League Cup, and it was in that competition that they played most recently.

They headed to Maidstone United earlier this week and lost 2-1, with striker Caylan Vickers’ late strike not enough to cancel out an earlier brace from Tristan Abrahams.

The match is being played at the Amex Elite Football Performance Centre, with kick-off at 4pm.
