Burnley suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday as a Harry Kane penalty proved the decider.
First half
Kevin Long, Matt Lowton and Maxwel Cornet came into the starting line up at Spurs, with James Tarkowski missing out through injury. Wout Weghorst and Aaron Lennon were named on the bench.
Leading the line for the Clarets was Cornet and Ashley Barnes, with Burnley operating a five man defence at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The hosts were seeing plenty of possession in the opening stages of the game, with Burnley’s defence standing strong with important blocks, tackles and headers.
Nick Pope denied his England international colleague Kane in the 12th minute as he got above the Burnley defence to direct Lucas Moura’s cross towards goal, but our number one was quick to react to make the save.
Two minutes later, Ben Davies tried his luck from just on the edge of the ‘D’ but Pope was again on hand to deny the hosts.
Nathan Collins made an incredible goal line clearance, facing his own net, to deny Kane a certain goal. From the resulting corner, Emerson Royal had a 30-yard strike tipped over by Pope as Tottenham maintained their early pressure in North London.
Burnley showed their threat to the Tottenham defence just after the 20 minute mark, when a cross from Charlie Taylor was nearly met by Dwight McNeil, but Ryan Sessegnon got his body in the way.

On the stroke of half time, a very harsh penalty decision went against the Clarets for handball which Harry Kane scored to give Spurs a 1-0 lead.
Second half
The Clarets nearly grabbed an equaliser in the first couple of minutes, as a Josh Brownhill free kick was headed wide by Kevin Long.
A couple of minutes later, Nathan Collins headed just over from a McNeil free-kick on the opposite side, a strong start to the second period by the visitors.

Tottenham began to pick up the pace as Sessegnon took possession from Long, but Kane’s shot was over the crossbar.
Burnley were a fraction away from scoring an equaliser as Collins picked out McNeil and Clarets academy graduate played a well weighted through ball for Barnes, who turned and hit a thunderous strike against the post with just over an hour played.
A world class save from Pope denied Son Heung-Min from point blank range, our number one getting a firm right hand to push away for a corner kick.
Burnley’s first change came with just under 15 minutes to go, as former Spurs man Aaron Lennon came on for Lowton and Dutch international Wout Weghorst joined the action in place of Barnes.
Pope was again called into action with another world class stop to prevent Son from making it two goals to nil for the hosts.
At the other end, Long had a half chance for the Clarets on the turn inside the penalty box, but he couldn’t make a clean connection with the ball.
