Halil Dervişoğlu’s first goal in Claret & Blue saw Burnley complete a last-gasp Turf Moor comeback for the second time in four days, taking all three points from a 3-2 win against Rotherham United in midweek Sky Bet Championship action.
The Turkish striker came off the bench to net the winner in the 11th minute of time added on with Vincent Kompany’s side twice falling behind in an action-packed contest which had seen Jay Rodriguez and Manuel Benson’s levellers set the stage for a grand-stand finish.
Jack Cork returned to captain the Clarets having missed Saturday’s win over Reading through suspension. He replaced Samuel Bastien, who alongside Connor Roberts, was named on the bench. The Welsh international fullback was replaced in the starting 11 by Vitinho.
Matt Taylor meanwhile made three changes to his Rotherham side from their defeat at Cardiff City last weekend with Richard Wood, Cameron Humphreys & Georgie Kelly all dropping out. In their places came Grant Hall, Hakeem Odoffin & Brooke Norton-Cuffy.
First Half
The visitors got themselves ahead with their first chance of the evening on three minutes through captain Ben Wiles, finding space to head home Norton-Cuffy’s cross from the right wing at the back post.
Burnley thought they had an equaliser just four minutes later when Rodriguez connected with a corner from a few yards out, but Millers goalkeeper Viktor Johansson got a hand to his glancing header to first take the momentum out of the effort before one of his teammates scrambled clear off the line.

Wiles’ low drive at the other end was then adjudged to have been deflected behind and Jordan Beyer had to be alert from the resulting set-piece to block defender Hall’s stabbed effort from inside the six-yard box.
Johann Berg Gudmundsson connected with a searching cross from Anass Zaroury soon after on the volley, seeing his attempt saved well by Swede Johansson, and Clarets shot stopper Arijanet Muric also reacted well just after the half-hour mark to tip Conor Washington’s shot around the post.
The first equaliser of the night eventually came on 35 minutes via the head of Rodriguez. It couldn’t have been an easier finish for the frontman who headed home from a yard out after Nathan Tella had looped a ball over Johansson from the byline, meeting a ball into the area from Gudmundsson to do so.

Visitors Rotherham carved out an opportunity of their own in the aftermath of the leveller with Wes Harding sending a header wide from a whipped free-kick delivery, before Burnley had a second effort of the game cleared off the line.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis nodded the ball into the path of Tella having met Josh Brownhill’s corner, and the forward beat Johansson on the turn but saw his strike cleared away by a defender.
Referee Leigh Doughty added five minutes on at the end of the opening 45 which brought Burnley two chances.
The first of which saw Tella strike wide from just inside the box following a counter-charge headed up by Ian Maatsen, while the second – the last action of note prior to the break as the two sides headed in level – fell to Rodriguez who headed wide on the stretch from another Zaroury cross.
Second Half
Starting strong come the restart, Kompany’s men went close with a speculative effort from Zaroury who almost caught Johansson out with a disguised curled effort. The ‘keeper was scrambling, but caught the ball just in time to prevent it hitting the roof of the net.
But against the run of play, Rotherham introduced forward Chiedozie Ogbene off the bench shortly after the hour-mark and he made an almost instant impact, racing into the area to score on 64 minutes, putting his side back in front in the process.

Prior, Kompany had brought Manuel Benson on for the Clarets and he went close with a dipping strike soon after Ogbene’s goal, but saw the effort deflected wide with the visitors dealing with the corner which followed.
Dervişoğlu, Ashley Barnes and Roberts were also introduced, with Roberts involved instantly, wiped out by Cohen Bramall who saw a second yellow and a subsequent red from referee Doughty for the reckless challenge.
Muric then held onto a tame shot from Millers substitute Jamie Lindsay before Brownhill sent a header into the ground and wide from Benson’s cross as Burnley continued the search for a second leveller of the night.
Roberts was also denied with a diving header by a good stop from Johansson having met a ball across the box from Dervişoğlu, and the ‘keeper then denied Barnes on 85 minutes.
Striker Barnes had the ball in the back of the net on the volley moments later, finishing Maatsen’s deflected delivery well, but was denied by the linesman’s offside flag.
Taylor’s Millers wound the clock down at every given opportunity, but Burnley wouldn’t be denied for long as Belgian Benson curled home an exquisite leveller in the first of 10 minutes added on at the end of the game, leaving Johansson with no chance.

Maatsen then drove a strike inches wide from a quickly-taken corner, while Benson also had an effort held, with time added onto time added on after Rotherham players went down requiring treatment.
And with one of the last kicks of the game would come some Turkish delight for the Clarets, who are now 17 games unbeaten in all competitions after the 100th-minute winner.
A throw-in to Benson taken quickly by Roberts afforded Brownhill the time for a strike from the edge of the box which Johansson parried, and there was Dervişoğlu to mop up the rebound, sparking scenes of jubilation around Turf Moor.
