Burnley suffered their first defeat in four Premier League matches as Leicester City won 2-0 at Turf Moor on Tuesday night (1st March).
On his return to the side, winger Maxwel Cornet thought he had given the Clarets a first half lead but had a goal ruled out for offside, with the Foxes netting twice in the last 10 minutes to earn three points.
Clarets manager Sean Dyche made three changes to the side which drew 1-1 away at Crystal Palace last Saturday, with Cornet, Ashley Westwood and Charlie Taylor all returning after spells on the sidelines.
Young striker Lewis Richardson was also named on the bench having signed a contract extension with the Clarets recently.
Meanwhile, visitors Leicester came into the game on the back of a free weekend due to Chelsea’s involvement in the Carabao Cup final, but made four changes from the team which won away at Danish Side Randers in the UEFA Conference League last Thursday.
James Maddison scored a brace in that game as Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes progressed into the Round of 16, but lost his place at Turf Moor and dropped to the bench alongside the returning Jamie Vardy, who hadn’t featured in the Premier League since late December.
Before kick-off, both teams warmed up in t-shirts with the powerful message of ‘Football Stands United – No War’, showing solidarity and offering our support to the ongoing situation in Ukraine.
As the sides entered the pitch, blue and yellow – the colours of the Ukrainian flag – were also shown on the pitchside LED boards, with members of the local Ukrainian community also in attendance as invited guests of the club.
First Half
Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans had the first chance of the contest for the visitors five minutes in, firing a dipping effort over the bar having picked up the ball inside the Burnley half.
Clarets’ goalkeeper Pope then pulled off a fine save soon after to deny Leicester’s Pereira with Burnley having to withstand some early pressure from Leicester.
And on 18 minutes, Pope was brought into action again to deny Patson Daka’s half volley at close range as the ball bounced around the Burnley box following a Leicester corner.
Almost imminently though, the Clarets went up the other end and thought they had the opener. Ivory Coast winger Cornet got in a good position and tapped home Aaron Lennon’s cushioned ball from a few yards out after the latter had beaten his man down the wing, only for the offside flag to go up.
A short VAR review confirmed the goal was to be disallowed with Cornet in an offside position by the barest of margins.
On 31 minutes, with the Clarets firmly in the ascendancy, Leicester sprung a counter-attack but Burnley-born Harvey Barnes misfired as he took aim at goal from a matter of yards out.
Prior to the break, having required treatment once previously, captain Ben Mee was forced off through injury with Irishman Nathan Collins his replacement.
And involved at the back immediately, Collins helped to slow down Foxes’ winger Barnes who eventually reached the area on 41 minutes and cut back to hammer a powerful strike at goal which Pope saved well with a quick reaction stop.

Second Half
At the restart, Burnley looked lively and almost went ahead within three minutes as Welsh defender Connor Roberts ventured forward to try his luck with a curling effort on St David’s Day. Leicester ‘keeper Kasper Schmeichel had to adjust well to tip the shot away from danger.
Dyche’s men had to stand strong on 59 minutes to block Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s free-kick and subsequent follow-up in a dangerous position with defender Collins leading the charge.
And at the other end, Cornet went close for the Clarets with a poked effort at goal having been slipped through by Dwight McNeil though the effort trickled narrowly wide.
Ivorian Cornet was then replaced by Rodriguez with 20 minutes remaining as Burnley went in search of the opening goal while Vardy and Maddison were also both introduced by Brendan Rodgers less than 60 seconds later.
The Clarets’ faithful lifted the noise level inside Turf Moor when McNeil earned a corner with a strike at goal on 73 minutes, though James Tarkowski couldn’t connect cleanly with Josh Brownhill’s set piece in the air.
At the other end, Vardy tried an acrobatic effort as the ball looped up from Maddison’s cross, but Burnley defender Taylor applied enough pressure towards the striker force the striker into hitting his attempt over the bar.
‘Keeper Pope sprang into action on 80 minutes to tip Barnes’ curling effort around the post in fine style, but could do nothing to stop Leicester taking the lead moments later.
Substitute Maddison picked the ball up in the Clarets’ half and drove forward with his strike from the edge of the area finding the far corner of the net.
Dyche’s men almost drew level instantly as Collins met a Brownhill corner and flicked on, but Wout Weghorst couldn’t convert at the far post on the stretch.
In a bid to bolster his attacking options, Dyche then replaced midfielder Westwood with striker Ashley Barnes late on in a final throw of the dice.
Leicester though struck again as the clock ticked past 90 minutes with Vardy finding space inside the box to head home Barnes’ cross from the left wing.
And though Burnley continued to push for a goal throughout the three minutes of additional time at Turf Moor, it ended 2-0 to the visitors.
