Manager Sean Dyche made one change from Tuesday’s home draw against Manchester United, as Aaron Lennon replaced Dwight McNeil in the starting line-up.
A Fabinho opener five minutes before half-time sent the visitors in front, when he struck from close-range after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner.
And despite Burnley having chances, it proved to be the decisive moment.
First-half
Jurgen Klopp’s Reds created the first chance of the contest inside 10 minutes. Mo Salah clipped a flighted ball from right to left for Andy Robertson to cross into the box for Salah at the back post, who shot off target.
Connor Roberts then did well to throw himself in the way of Robertson’s drive from distance to concede a corner.

Burnley forced Alisson into action on 14 minutes, when Wout Weghorst found Josh Brownhill to hit a swerving effort from range, which the Brazilian stopper palmed round for a corner.
Nick Pope thwarted Naby Keita’s low drive from the edge of the box after Sadio Mane’s pass, our England international pushed the ball out, with Roberts clearing to safety.
The Clarets went close minutes later, when after captain Ben Mee’s well-timed tackle, Jay Rodriguez broke forward with possession before releasing Weghorst, but the Dutch striker’s dink was stopped by Alexander-Arnold’s clearance.
Alisson later gathered Cornet’s strike on the turn on the edge of the box after positive build-up play.
Burnley were knocking on the door, Cornet’s long-range free-kick was helped on into the box by Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip. Rodriguez reacted first but his low strike was smothered by Alisson.

Clarets’ goalkeeper Pope was positioned to keep out Mane’s snapshot in the box after play dropped to the recent Africa Cup of Nations winner.
On the half-hour, Roberts’ through ball sent Weghorst one-on-one with Alisson to beat, he poked his attempt wide of the bottom right-post.
Having seen Pope save his earlier strike, Fabinho put Liverpool ahead on 40 minutes. Mane’s flick on from Alexander-Arnold’s set-piece fell for the defensive midfielder to turn the ball into the bottom left-corner right-footed from a matter of yards, beyond Pope and Cornet on the line.
Second-half
Burnley had a good start to the second-half. Mee headed Cornet’s corner wide before Brownhill’s dipping chance was comfortable for Alisson.
Weghorst then tried his luck from distance, which Alisson saved, as Dyche’s men looked to level.

Dyche made his first change on 62 minutes, swapping Rodriguez for McNeil.
Threatening to score a second, Roberto Firmino and Fabinho were both unable to find the target for the Anfield outfit.
Burnley forced into another substitution with 72 minutes played, as Weghorst went down holding his knee, to be replaced by Ashley Barnes.
Up the other end, Mee turned behind Alexander-Arnold’s dangerous ball prior to Erik Pieters intercepting Thiago’s pass heading for Salah.
Later opportunities for Firmino and Diogo Jota to increase Liverpool’s advantage went wide.
