Welcome to Turf Moor for this afternoon’s game against Liverpool. It’s my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to Jürgen Klopp, the players, staff, directors, and supporters joining us today.
Despite the tough weather conditions for the second consecutive home match, it was fantastic to see so many of you at Turf Moor on Tuesday night and your support for Sean and the team was heard throughout.
The team showed great courage to come from one goal behind to draw against Manchester United, one of the biggest football clubs in the world. I must also congratulate Jay Rodriguez after he scored his 100th career league goal to help secure a valuable point and goalkeeper Nick Pope for his 200th career league appearance, two tremendous achievements. Away from the pitch, this week we were excited to launch a brand-new Club initiative, Clarets View. As One Club for All, having an open dialogue with supporters is a key focus for us and forms an important part of our strategy. Clarets View offers supporters the opportunity to give their view on the football club, to help us shape decisions and implement ideas. The initiative takes the format of short fan surveys, which will be sent periodically to those who sign up to the scheme.
As a forward-thinking Club, we are always looking for progressive ways to drive Burnley FC forward and Clarets View is just one of the exciting developments we have in the pipeline.
As Chairman, feedback and collaborating closely with fans is important to me. Burnley FC is your Club too and we hope you can join us by taking part in Clarets View, to grow and develop our football club together.
I was also pleased to see the news this week that we have improved our position in the newly released 2021 Premier League Environmental Sustainability Matrix, organised by Sports Positive Leagues. As Premier League clubs we are all responsible for operating in a more sustainable manner and reducing our carbon footprint.
We climbed the table this year, finishing in 14th place, having previously ranked 19th last year.
As a Club we have made a conscious effort to make progress in this area over the course of the last year. We implemented a number of environmental initiatives including being crowned winners of Planet Super League in the summer, a programme of installing LED lights, water use reduction strategies and the establishment by fans of @SustainClarets, the ‘Sustainable Burnley FC’ supporters’ group, amongst a variety of activities. Sustainability is a key area for us here at Burnley FC and we commit to continuing to make improvements in the coming years.
We also recently shared a story about one of our women’s player’s, Hollie Kelsh. In 2019, Hollie developed a heart condition which causes a type of abnormal heart rhythm, or arrhythmia. Over the course of two years Hollie underwent extensive surgery on her heart, three times, and faced a long journey back to being able to play football. I’m delighted that through a great deal of determination and in working closely with the Club’s physiotherapy team, Hollie has now returned to the squad and was named in the starting line up for the women’s game against Derby County Women recently. In a special turn of events Hollie scored the winning goal on the afternoon and it’s wonderful to see her back on the pitch.
Back to today, it’s a been a busy week at Turf Moor, with the arrival of two European Cup winners Manchester United and Liverpool, in the space of just a few days.
Let’s get behind Sean and the team!
Up the Clarets!
Alan
