Sunday is International Women’s Day 2026, and Burnley FC are proud to champion and drive gender diversity across the Club.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #GiveToGain, which encourages a mindset of generosity and collaboration, while emphasising the power of reciprocity and support.

Advancements within Burnley FC Women

The Club continued to strengthen its commitment to women and girls throughout the 2025/26 season, expanding pathways, elevating visibility, and investing in the long-term development of the women’s game.

Our women’s team have transitioned to full-time professional status with further investment into the resources, support and environment around the squad ensuring they have everything they need to compete and develop at a high level.

Following the launch of the men’s team’s Keeping The Faith series, in an exciting move the women’s team announced an exclusive documentary series of their own. ‘Limitless’ offers premium behind-the-scenes access showcasing their triumphs on the pitch, as well as the personal stories that shape the players away from the game.

As part of the Club’s mission to champion women and girls and strengthen the female football pathway, the women’s team continued to inspire the younger generation through engaging community visits.

Players supported primary school assemblies across the local community, and helped coach football training sessions for pupils, truly encompassing the ‘If you can see it, you can be it’ motto.

Women and Girls Football Coaching Programme

The Club were delighted to launch a new initiative giving women and girls 16+ a strong introduction to professional coaching.

Aiming to build knowledge, confidence, and practical experience through insight sessions with Club and Burnley FC in the Community coaches, plus shadowing and mentorship at the Clarets’ Training Ground – the programme is a positive step forward in ensuring females are encouraged and well equipped to tackle professional coaching roles within the game.

Her Game Too

The Club proudly continued their relationship with Her Game Too.

Joining forces with supporter and Her Game Too Ambassador Charlotte Rigby, enabled us to gain valuable insight into creating a safe and inclusive environment at Turf Moor, for female fans to feel empowered and engage with the game.

A vital part of this work involved the introduction of Safeguarding Stewards at our home games, to support the safety and wellbeing of all fans, with particular focus on women and girls.

A new Report line was launched with the process of reporting antisocial behaviour simplified, making it easier to report any abuse safely and confidentially via phone in the stadium.

Further to this, all hospitality staff at the stadium received ‘Ask For Angela’ training, helping guests discreetly seek help if they feel unsafe.

‘Ask Angela’ signage was also positioned around the stadium reinforcing the Club’s commitment to creating a secure and welcoming environment.

“The work we’re doing at Burnley FC to champion women and girls is something I’m really proud of, it’s as strong as anywhere I’ve worked,” said Gary Russell, Head of Safeguarding at the Club.

“From our dedicated Matchday Safeguarding Team and the renewed Report line with new technology across the stadium, to being one of only a handful of Clubs using the ‘Ask for Angela’ initiative to help keep everyone safe. We’re creating a real difference. It’s a testament to the commitment and support of the Chairman and Board, who give us the freedom to develop and drive these initiatives forward.

“However, there’s always more to do, and we remain committed to learning, improving, and pushing this agenda so that football is a place where all women and girls feel welcome and inspired.”

Taking steps forward together

At Burnley Football Club we are committed to advocating for women and girls in football.

Whilst International Women’s Day offers an opportunity to recognise the achievements and contributions of women in football, we will continue to take positive steps forward every day to support all females engaging with the Club and play our part in inspiring the future generation of female Clarets.

Georgia Hargreaves, EDI Lead at Burnley FC added: “International Women’s Day is a perfect moment for us to recognise the progress we’ve made on gender equality as a Club. From our women’s team becoming full‑time to initiatives that give young girls the chance to gain their coaching qualifications, there is a great deal to be proud of this year.

“We’re excited to keep this momentum going and to keep pushing for meaningful, lasting change as a Club.”

To mark International Women’s Day, Burnley FC’s business networking event, Clarets Connect, will host its next event on Wednesday 15 April with the theme Women in Sport.

The event will feature guest speaker Lola Ogunbote, Burnley FC’s Head of Women’s Football, who will share insights on overcoming adversity in sport, her personal journey in football, and the mindset required to build resilience both on and off the pitch.

Attendees will also hear from Burnley FC in the Community’s Female Football Development team, alongside other influential women working across sport and business. The event aims to celebrate the achievements of women in the industry, encourage meaningful discussion, and highlight the importance of greater representation and opportunity across sport and the wider business community.
