League campaign continues in Chorley

Burnley Women play their 17th Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League match of the season this weekend, with Rugby Borough travelling to Lancashire.

The Clarets are top of the tree as it stands, following a 3-0 triumph over West Bromwich Albion last time out.

Rugby Borough are also competing at the top end of the table and sit 3rd, 11 points adrift with 10 wins and three draws to their name.

The Midlanders have won back-to-back matches in all competitions, putting six past an Aston Villa academy side in the Birmingham FA Challenge Cup last weekend.

How to watch

The match will take place at Grant Story Victory Park Stadium in Chorley (PR7 3DU) and tickets can be purchased on arrival at the venue.

Adults are £5 and under 14s are £1, with cash and card payments accepted.

The opposition

Rugby Borough are an established tier three side, having spent the last three seasons at this level following relegation from the Championship.

Experienced manager Lee Burch has been in the dugout since the summer of 2022, and the Oranges play at their own facility on Kilsby Lane.

After beating Halifax in the league, Burch’s team played Aston Villa U21s in the semi-finals of the Birmingham FA Challenge Cup last weekend.

Sofia Mallon gave them the perfect start after just 40 seconds and an own goal, alongside strikes from Yasmin Mosby and Lily Greenslade, gave them a 4-0 lead at half-time.

Greenslade netted another after the interval, before Malika Apindia completed the 6-0 rout.

Players to look out for include top scorer Greenslade, who has netted eight in all competitions, and captain Ebony Wiseman, who operates as a central midfielder.

There are some familiar faces in the squad too, with Amelia Hazard and Alanta Brown both having represented Burnley at one point in their careers.

"We've had a good couple of weeks and we've been able to get some messages into the group.

"They've got some more minutes in their legs too, and each day is about trying to make ourselves better ahead of a competitive game on Sunday.

"Every team in this league offers a different challenge, and that's no different this weekend.

"Rugby are well coached under Lee (Burch) and Sian (Osmond) so we know it's going to be a test, but it's about us more than anything and how we adapt to what they may well throw at us.

"If we execute on the day, hopefully, we can get a positive result."
