Two former players of both clubs who will be watching Sunday's televised Premier League game at the Turf with interest will be ex-Claret and Cherries men Wade Elliott and Marvin Bartley.
Elliott will always have a special place in the hearts of Clarets fans, playing 282 games for Burnley between 2005 and 2011. His time at the club saw the Southampton-born winger play in both the Championship & the Premier League and the former midfielder was also a hugely popular player during his five-year stay at Bournemouth, scoring 37 times in over 250 matches in all competitions before joining Burnley in July 2005.
The 45-year-old was an instrumental figure during his time in Lancashire but will always be fondly remembered for scoring the historic goal which took the Clarets to the Premier League in 2009. His stunning strike from outside the area settled the Championship Play-Off Final against Sheffield United at Wembley.
“That’s the obvious one,” said Elliott. “That whole period, when you speak to anybody, they will have a million happy memories from that period. We always looked forward to coming to work. There were a lot of highlights. The mood around the place, the training ground, on matchdays, and the buzz around the whole town. I was lucky really, it was a really special period.
“For our group to be able to add to that kind of history, we were quite privileged to be able to do that. The people up there are so passionate, and you feed into it when you come into the town. I was lucky to play a part in that.”
The former Birmingham City and Bristol City man also explained how his transfer from the South Coast to Turf Moor came about.
“I’d been doing ok for Bournemouth for a few years. Then I played at Turf Moor in the FA Cup and I played well, we lost but we played well and were the better team on the day and I had a decent game.
"That game probably cemented the move to Burnley. I was approached by three or four different clubs in the Championship but Burnley pretty much sold me the dream straight away.
"To be honest I loved it there because the football club in Burnley was the centre of everything. Everybody’s week was geared to football and they were so passionate about it. It struck a chord with me. I felt at home straight away.”
There have been many former players such as Wade Elliott who played for both clubs and Marvin Bartley also has a special connection with the Clarets and the Cherries.
After joining Bournemouth, Bartley quickly became a mainstay of the side under Eddie Howe, making more than 130 appearances and earning a new contract during the 2009/10 campaign. The midfielder then moved to Turf Moor in the 2011 January transfer window, joining Howe in what turned out to be a rollercoaster couple of days for the Reading-born man.
“There were some ups and downs at the club, we went into administration twice, had points deductions,” Bartley commented on his time at Bournemouth. “Getting promoted to League One was fantastic. It was probably a stand-out moment for me, then I ended up moving to Burnley with Eddie Howe.
“Burnley came out of the Premier League. I went up to Burnley. There had been contact between the two clubs, my agent told me, weeks went by then it was Deadline Day and Bournemouth kept rejecting bids.
"The club called me to say they wanted me to stay and asked me what I wanted to do. I said I’ll stay if you want me to. I then got a call about midday when a bid was put in, which was rejected. I thought that was it, I got to my house, and the deadline closed at 11 o’clock.
“Then I was told to get myself in the car, it’s going to get done. Travelling from Bournemouth to Burnley I will never forget it. I called my brother, he told me to drive to Reading where he lived and he said he would drive from there.
"Then we got there. I don’t know how my brother got me there, we hammered it up the motorway, got there at 10 to 11, to the office, to Turf Moor, and I think the move was being done by fax!
“I was told as long as it was started it was fine, they put us in a hotel, my brother had work in the morning, and then it was Burnley v Forest the following evening. I was waiting for everything to be confirmed.
"I got a call later saying it might not go through - the fax got jammed. You had to have proof of the time the paperwork started if the deadline had closed.
“I remember getting halfway back down to Bournemouth then got a call saying it’s fine it's all done. I can’t explain the smile on my face when the move was confirmed.”
Bartley, who is now a manager in Scotland at Queen of the South, recalls scoring against Blackpool and playing against Blackburn at Ewood Park, memories he says will always be part of his football journey. The former midfielder still keeps an eye on his former clubs and believes the game is going to be entertaining.
“They (Burnley) won the league last season and were brilliant. They have been extremely unlucky not to pick up more points this season.
"Bournemouth are doing really well. I imagine it to be a fantastic footballing game. I love both clubs, but I don’t want to see Burnley get relegated. I think it will be an exciting game with goals scored.”
Elliott agreed with Bartley and is also expecting an entertaining game between the Clarets and the Cherries this afternoon.
“I’ve seen bits and bobs of Burnley over the past two years, I also watched the documentary. Vincent Kompany is a really impressive guy. The Premier League is very difficult. He is really good at what he does, I admire he’s stuck to his principles.
"I watched Bournemouth against Manchester City last weekend and both teams will want to attack and dominate the ball. I think it will be a really good game.”
The full interview with the duo will also be available in 'Turf' the matchday programme on Sunday which is available to purchase online and in and around Turf Moor.
