Burnley Football Club were pleased to welcome representatives from the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO) and the Premier League to Turf Moor this week, as part of a dedicated session aimed at improving understanding of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

The event, held with club officials and members of local supporter groups in attendance, provided a detailed insight into how VAR operates on matchdays, including the technology behind the system, the decision-making process, and the communication protocols used between referees and Premier League’s VAR hub at Stockley Park.

Fans were given the opportunity to see real-life examples of VAR in action, alongside explanations from refereeing experts about how decisions are reviewed, what the on-field referee hears, and why certain calls take longer than others. The session also allowed supporters to put their own questions directly to officials, helping to build transparency around one of the most talked-about elements of the modern game.
