Tuesday night's captain Joe Worrall insisted that he and his teammates 'dropped below the standards', as the Clarets crashed out of the Carabao Cup to Cardiff City.
The Sky Bet League One side were two goals ahead at the break thanks to goals from Joel Colwill and Callum Robinson, before Zian Flemming pulled a goal back for the Clarets in the second-half.
Despite efforts to go on and equalise, Worrall was left more than disappointed in an honest interview with Clarets+ following the full-time whistle at Turf Moor.
The 28-year-old said: "A very disappointing night, we dropped well below the standards we have set ourselves.
"I think with the goals in the first-half we gave ourselves a mountain to climb and then second-half we came out better.
"But we should never be two down at home and we gave ourselves a lot to do. We let ourselves down, let the Club down, let the fans down and it hurts for me to say it, but it's the truth.
"We now have to dust ourselves down this week, look at what went wrong tonight, be man enough to own it and take it on the chin."
The Clarets' attention now turns to Saturday's trip to the Etihad to face Manchester City and Worrall is eager to get back on the training pitch this week.
"The games come thick and fast, we have another game on Saturday and before then we need to get back on the training pitch and progress as a group.
"But credit where credit's due tonight, Cardiff played some good stuff and good luck to them in the next round."
