Burnley U21s will be aiming to build momentum from their Premier League Cup victory earlier this week when Sunderland visit Lancashire for league action on Friday night.

The young Clarets recorded a well-deserved win over Cardiff City on Tuesday, marking a successful start to their Group F campaign.

With several of the team involved in the first team’s Carabao Cup match, it was a youthful squad that travelled to the Welsh capital.

They weren’t to be deterred, though, and it was Charlie Veevers who opened the scoring with a fantastic finish as he continues his recovery from injury.

Cardiff equalised soon afterwards but striker Kamarni Ryan got the rewards his hard work deserved with five minutes to play.

After latching on to Kian McMahon-Brown’s perfectly weighted through ball, the 19-year-old finished well into the bottom right corner.

Burnley’s last Premier League 2 outing was last week’s 2-1 defeat to Southampton and ahead of this match, Andy Farrell’s side sit 22nd in the 29-team table.

Opponents Sunderland are slightly lower in 28th having not picked up a point from their three league matches to date.

The Black Cats have had a little bit of a break since their last outing, a 4-0 loss to Boston in the National League Cup on 16th September.

Graeme Murty’s side’s last league match came at the end of August, when they were beaten 4-2 by West Ham United despite striker Timur Tutierov’s brace.

Burnley may take heart from the fact that they beat Sunderland in the Premier League Cup last season.

Tom Tweedy’s 18th-minute strike was the difference between the two teams on a chilly night in Chorley back in March, with the Clarets booking their place in the quarter finals of the competition.

Tickets for this match at the County Ground, Leyland (PR25 2LF) can be purchased on the day, although Burnley season ticket holders can get in for free by showing their season ticket at the turnstiles.

Other adults are priced at £5, while concessions are £2.50.
