Clarets boss previews test against the Toffees

There's a quick turnaround for the Clarets following Saturday's dramatic defeat to Brentford, as the side prepare to take on Everton in Merseyside on Tuesday night.

Speaking to the media on Monday afternoon, boss Scott Parker reflected on the 'incredible' reaction his players showed to going behind against the Bees and looked ahead to what he described as a 'huge challenge' at Everton.

FEELINGS POST-BRENTFORD

“Mentally we’re in a good place and we have been in a good place. I think the weekend’s game was a mix between a real poor part, certainly the start of the game, and I say the start of the game – the first 10 minutes there’s nothing in it really. We concede a poor goal on our part, a free header which was hugely disappointing.

“The game then quickly changes, before you know it, you’re three down. Then the second half, or the back end of the first half, we get ourselves somewhere with a goal and I think after that it was a really, really impressive, incredible performance.

“We fell short on a couple of decisions not falling our way.

“Generally, it’s mixed, the way the game ended for us and practically the whole second half we take great positives from, so the lads are in a good place.”

SHOWING SPIRIT

“That performance at the weekend probably epitomised everything about this group. It was a tough environment. At half-time I certainly sensed that in the group and I could see where they were. But they reacted in the right way, we showed a quality and there were some huge, huge positives.

“We scored five goals in a Premier League game, from 60 minutes of football is pretty impressive. The endeavour about us was superb in a testing game for us where there weren’t just some little punches, there were some big ones being thrown.

“We regrouped and showed that spirit which we’re going to need, and we’ve always needed it from the start of the season. That was massively evident.”

BITS TO FIX

“We need to fix up the bits where we don’t give ourselves too much to do in games. Albeit at this present moment in time where we’re giving ourselves too much to do – Palace two goals down you’re thinking you’re going to have to go and score three goals to win a game of football in the Premier League. That’s a big, big ask. Bang, we do it.

“The weekend you’re three nil down, you’re thinking you’re going to have to score four goals to win or three goals to get a point out of this. Bang, we do it.

“We need to now not give ourselves this big task, that we seem to be able to do, to maybe make life a tiny bit easier for us.”

THE TOFFEES

“I like Everton, they’re a good side. A brilliant coach in David. Good team, you have players coming back now as well. Last time we played them they were a little bit depleted down to injuries and players being away with AFCON.

“They’ve made some acute signings in the summer with some really good players and they’re picking up some good results. One being the weekend, going away to Newcastle and getting three points there.

“I’ve not been to the new stadium, a different experience. We’re up against a huge challenge of course we are. But as always, we’re looking forward to that challenge and we’re looking to try and take this head on.”
