Head Coach happy with three points against Swans

Scott Parker admitted he was very happy to secure what he called a 'crucial' three points in Saturday afternoon's 2-0 victory at Swansea City.

Reflecting on a professional display in a game that saw two first half goals make the difference, the Clarets boss said he wanted to ensure the team headed into the March international break with three points and solid performance.

“Our intention was always to come here to get three points, and our intention was to start pretty quick. We did that, I thought we punished them, set up the way we set it up. Executed very, very well with the two goals. Fair to say at that moment we had some other biggish chances, the game becomes a little bit end to end. But overall, it’s a tough place to come, coming out of a really busy schedule as well. We end it with three points which is crucial.”

The win in Wales sees the Clarets extend their unbeaten run to 25 matches and Parker was pleased it could be extended with an impressive 'workmanlike' performance.

“I don’t think it can be anything to turn away from really, 25 unbeaten at this present moment in time. I thought it was a real professional, at times workmanlike performance. I thought we managed the game; we looked very mature in the way we played and very mature in how we dealt with the threats that they posed. They went a bit more direct, and we knew that would be a problem. We needed to execute on second balls, we needed to be very good in first contact and I thought we did that very, very well and that’s what pleased me. And also, what pleases me is the three points really.”

The game was Burnley's last before this month's international break. How important was it to Parker to head into the break with a positive, confident win and performance under their belt?

“Always, the most crucial time is just before you go and have a break, an international break, you always want to end it with three points and solid performance.

“Obviously, it’s a long time now before we play, ten days, or a couple of weeks, so you never really want to end this time before an international break on a poor performance or not winning a football match.

“We came here today with one outset, that was to win the game. We wanted to do it in a way that was entertaining. The first part of the game we did that very, very well and throughout the game we managed it very well.”

The clean sheet also saw the Club break a new second tier record, 27 clean sheets in a league campaign. Contributing heavily to the record is goalkeeper James Trafford who has made the Head Coach proud with his displays and his recent call up to the senior England squad, Thomas Tuchel's first.

“I’m proud as well to be honest with you, I’m sure Traff is really proud. I’m really proud of him as well. I think I’ve mentioned it many times, Traff at the beginning of the season it was tough for him, and I think last year was very tough for him. That’s how things pan out sometimes in sport and when adversity hits you, you need to have a reaction.

“Early on in the season, pre-season, he got his head down and I’m proud of the man he’s turning into, I’m proud of the human he’s turned into, and I see improvements constantly. I think the scary thing from my side is I still think there’s loads of areas and still more improvement to come.

“So, I’m proud that he’s got his first senior call up, deservedly so because he’s been outstanding. Hopefully, he goes there now, gets a chance, and comes back fit and well.”

With several of the squad away with their countries over the break, Parker is pleased that some will get some much-needed rest.

“Certainly, at this point of the season now, eight games left. It’s been pretty full on, it’s been relentless game after game, travelling. It’s an important time to give the boys some time just to rest up a little bit, recharge, not think about football too much now in the next few days. Because they deserve not to, they need to enjoy some time with their families, just enjoy their own little space and their own time.

“We’ll get back to work midweek and get ready for now which is the run in for the season.”
