Winger looks ahead to West Bromwich Albion

Burnley Women take on West Bromwich Albion this afternoon, and Reanna Blades will be aiming to replicate the success she had against the Baggies in the reverse fixture.

The winger netted the only goal of the game when these two teams met at Turf Moor back in September, giving the Clarets all three points.

Looking back on the day, she said: “We wanted a higher scoreline but it was a good goal and assist from Anna (Grey) too.

“As a winger, when the ball’s on the other side you’ve always got to look for the back post.

“It did trickle past the goalkeeper and a defender, and when it came to me my first thought was just to shoot and thankfully it went in.”

Blades made her first Burnley appearance in six weeks last weekend, coming off the bench to replace Heidi Logan in the 51st minute against Nottingham Forest.

Part of that time saw the 20-year-old link up with the Jamaican women’s national team for a second time, with the Reggae Girlz playing two friendlies against Peru.

It was an extremely successful trip for Blades, who made both her debut and full debut in addition to netting her first goal for the country.

“Scoring in the second game felt big and was a good achievement,” she continued.

“In the moment I couldn’t process it because we still had 20 minutes or so to play.

“After the game I was just grateful and when you’re given an opportunity you have to take it, and I feel like I did that.

“Everyone here at Burnley was very supportive and a few watched the game. I got lots of messages straight after the game and it was nice to have the support.”

The Clarets travel to the Midlands on the back of a third straight defeat last time out, with two first-half goals from Forest being enough for them to earn all three points.

Blades finished by reflecting on the result and looking ahead to what she and her team-mates are expecting at the Valley Stadium, Redditch, this afternoon.

“We weren’t the better team on the day,” she said.

“We’ve been working hard on the training pitch this week and need to put that into place at West Brom.

“It doesn’t matter who the opponents are, we prepare for very game the same way and we’ve got to play to our standards and do the basics well.

“A win would be good because it will build our confidence. The last three results don’t help of course, but we’ll be going into Sunday with a positive mindset.”

The Valley Stadium in Redditch (B97 4AU) is the venue for this afternoon’s match, which kicks off at 3pm.
