Clarets win away from home again

Goals from Naomi Hartley, Aimee Kelly and Brenna McPartlan earned Burnley Women a comprehensive victory over West Bromwich Albion on Sunday afternoon.

The Clarets looked in control for much of a brisk afternoon at the Valley Stadium in Redditch to earn three Northern Premier Division of the Women’s National League points.

Interim Head Coach Louise Roberts made five changes to the team that started against Nottingham Forest last week, with club captain Jade Richards returning to the defence.

Louise McDaniel and Louanne Worsey earned their first Clarets starts in midfield, with Danielle Maxwell playing to the right of striker Claudia Walker.

The Clarets had the better of the first half in terms of possession and attacks, with Maxwell looking particularly threatening in the opening stages.

After finding the side netting from a free-kick, the 22-year-old set up the overlapping Emma Siddall who crossed for Worsey to volley goalwards, but her effort was cleared off the line.

Burnley thought they had broken the deadlock just before the half hour and Worsey was involved again, producing a fine piece of skill to beat the Baggies defence.

Walker then took the ball off her toes and picked out the bottom right corner with a curling finish, but the assistant referee ruled it out for offside.

The Clarets spent the rest of the first half in control and probing but were unable to find a goal before the break.

It did almost come less than 30 seconds after the restart, when a goalkeeping error at the back forced Fran Orthodoxou to hook the ball off her own goal line.

Our next chance saw Siddall pick out Maxwell in acres of space on the right and she slid the ball through to Heidi Logan, who couldn’t quite get a shot away.

Roberts made her first two changes on the hour, with Worsey making way for Rhema Lord-Mears and Walker being replaced by Laura Elford.

The deadlock was then broken by Hartley shortly afterwards, who made a well-timed run to meet a McDaniel corner and plant a header into the bottom left corner.

Kelly replaced Logan with 68 minutes on the clock and West Brom missed a golden opportunity to equalise when Simran Jhamat cleared the frame of the goal from six yards.

Burnley’s final change saw Amelia Hazard replace McDaniel, and three West Brom switches saw Siobhan Hodgetts-Still’s side rally in the final 10 minutes.

However, they couldn't work Kirstie Levell and Kelly put the result beyond any doubt with a pinpoint finish into the bottom right corner from a Maxwell cross.

There was still time for a moment of magic from McPartlan, who scored her eighth goal of the season with a fine free kick from 22 yards in stoppage-time.

A 13th league win of the season takes our points tally to 40 from 18 matches, ahead of Thursday night’s Lancashire FA Senior Cup final against Chorley Women FC at the County Ground in Leyland.
